Hi guys!
As some of you may know, I had a 1999SRX 700 136" 2" 1,5 months ago. I put alot of time and efort into it, but eventually the fuel bills made me drewl after a fourstroke, it also fouled plugs often when riding in powder, I figured I had tried almost everything so I put it for sale and a few days later it was gone.
Then I went in the bank and asked kindly for a loan so that I could buy a 2004 Warrior. I payed 13800$ for the Warrior. (PS, sled prices are crazy in Norway, sled was mint, 2700kilometers).
Got it home and went up on the mountain. Came home and I was really depressed. REALLY unhappy with the handling, although I guess it`s my own fault since I bought a sled not suited for mountain riding. I put wider skis on it and adjusted the front suspenion, also removed the sway bar. It got better but I wasnt happy.
So I put it out for sale only 3 days after I got it.
No point in riding if you don`t think it`s fun.
After spending another 120$ on add`s, internet, newspapers etc. a guy finally called. He lived further north in my Country, I noticed that he had a "sami" like dialect. (sami people lives on the North of Norway and often get their income from dealing with reindeers). They are known to look upon the sleds as "a part of their life", they treat them like cars, like.. sleds arent that special for them.
I spoke with the guy on the phone, he was willing to trade his 2003 Viper Mountain with 2200 kilometers on the clock for my Warrior. I told him that I needed 3000$ between, he said forget it. He offered me 2200$. I then said, 2200$ included registration fee on the Viper. "I`ll think about it" he said.
Today we met, both of us had a 2,5 hour drive to the place where we met.
Talked to some guys at a gas station, they gave us the phone number to a guy in the neighbour hood who probably would alow us to test ride the sleds a little on his field.
We went there and test rode the sled.
My Warrior looked spanking new, 100% mint condition. While as the Viper which he said was 99% mint condition looked BAD.
1. Trailing arm had a dent, angle iron welded onto on the backside
2. Hole in the seat
3. Missing the little black cover that rests on the headlight
4. Hood has scratches basically everywhere, some minor some larger
5. Front suspension all scratchy, rust in scratches, looks messy
6. Found some almost melted wires in the harness that goes up in the hood, previous owner had triple pipes on it and they were so close to the harness that it almost melted. No big deal but still annoys me.
7. Power valve cable nr. 3 was missing a part of the rubber isolation
8. Un-original screws on powervalve nr. 2 (hehe, things like that should be stock)
9. He had mounted some switches that would allow you to turn off the lights incase the cops came after you. I like the switch but I dislike the fact that they have been fiddleing with the harness.
10. Rear bumper all scratched up.
11. He had removed the carbides and welded them larger, they stick out about 1,5cm more then stock. This gives the handlebar a nervous feel.
12. He had jetted it down two steps on the main. OK if it made it run right for his elevation, but I think I will switch to stock jets. Rather safe then sorry.
13. Windshield full of minor scratches.
All these things are basically just small things, but you don`t expect these kind of things on a sled that only has 2200 kilometers on the clocks.
I got somewhat disappointed over this.. since I was expecting a mint sled.
On top of all, he then offered me 1500$ in between.. .
I spent 2,5 hours negotiating the price up to 1800$.
I think that`s a lame way to do business.
But after alot of fighting we finally agreed on 1800$.
Here are some pics.
Before we left, nice weather, sun was shining. Melting the snow tho
Paper work
We have a deal..

She`s home!!

The seller surprised me with an aftermarked canister, he didn`t know what brand it was. He hadn`t been using that much because of the "sound". I fit it just after I got home and it sure made it sound nicer. But even more noise wouldn`t bother me.
The power valve cable I mentioned.
Wellwell so now I have a Viper. I`ve tested it alittle on our field, the front suspension is really "loose", it`s really easy to throw it from side to side, I like that.
Also seems to wheelie easily.
However the snow is so "rotten" , been mild weather for weeks now so it isn`t "good snow". Hope to test it on the mountain this weekend if there is any snow left.
I will have to move the handlebar a little forward, dunno if I will raise it.
I plan to get a new lower windshield, bar riser, hooks and maybe handguards, get the missing plastic cover above the headlight, fit new mountain skis, try to touch up the scratches on the hood , somehow.. . Also try to touch up the front suspension, I hate the ratty look. Polish tunnels better etc. etc.
Wellwell

Welcome back!! You have a bit of work to do but sled looks good. The best part is you get to ride a sled that you feel comfortable on plus we get to check TY all summer to see what your doing to this beast. congrats and hopefully you get a run or two on it before the melt.

gratulation with the viper. from a sami who does take care of the my motors.
Hi guys!
Thanks alot for the replies, really appreciate them.
Daman: I dunno about those control rods, I figure they havent been touch since it was new.. but you never know. As for the PV`s, I think we think very similiar. However it seems like the season is almost over, I wount bother to touch them, I don`t have new gaskets etc. Will order new gaskets for PV`s & exhaust and check them during the summer when I work on the sled.
ct700: Thanks, yes I would never believe that I would be much happier with an older sled, but they really attract me. Wierd.. .
I think I will make a thread yes, hehe.
Dunno about that last ride before the snow melts, it`s pretty much gone.. but I hope to take it up to the mountain one time before I start wrenching.. .
pro116: Thanks. I`m glad to hear that it`s maybe a Bender can, but doesn`t bender put their name on their cans?. I will take a better photo of it so you can decide.
It didn`t sound as cool as the SRX, but I guess that`s because the SRX has triple pipes stock.
As for the hood/suspension, you really gave me an idea now pro 116.. .
The suspension of this sled looks messy visually. It`s so frustrating to see a sled with a such low milage look like this.
The only good thing with having dull/scratchy looking paint is that the sled becomes easier to use, like you are less afraid of damaging it. Dunno if you understood what I ment but.. .
I hate to ride around with something that I think looks messy.
On the other side, I am not sure wether I should do the same with this sled as I did with the SRX. I guess it should go smoother with the painting process since I have more experience with painting hoods now, but the thing that makes me insecure is that the paint room I will have to use is soo bad, it`s rotten. I use my cousions paint room that he has in his tree fabricating shop, and we all know that there is alot of dust in a tree shop.
Another part of the problem is ventilation. I got really concerned about my health during the SRX project, I don`t drink alcohol but I felt pretty high after the last layer of paint on the SRX.
However, I will consider this seriously, would be cool to make it "mine" .
Any ides for other colors?. Anyone seen a yellow viper?.
Hmmm .
Blkhwkbob: GET A NEW NICK I HAD TO SCROLL UP 3 times to get your nick correct. Hehe only kidding. Yes I need another hat.. but I`ll keep it as a memory of the nice yamaha blue color I`ve seen infront of the bar as I rode the SRX before I painted it.
Mathis: Thanks ! . Hehe yeah I guess you know how they are.. but I think my Viper is close to mint condition technically.. .
Where do you live?.

i live in Karasjok, Finnmark. Normally a sami uses the snowmobile for two-three seasons, then it is gone around 25000 km if used in reindeer herding.
Offtopic: I am looking for wider ski´s for the MM, do you know where to buy new Yamaha 2005 - mountain skis?
Hi guys!
Thanks for the replies!.
If you want I can remove the silencer and shoot some pics of it.. we have to figure this out hehe.
At first I didn`t think it was loud enough, but when I pin it, it does sound nice. Dunno if I will miss the "pinging" I got in my head after riding my SRX with the bender can.
Daman, maybe I should lightly buff the hood and then put some clear on it?. Should make it shine again. ?. Or is it stupid to have clear over the decals?.
Mathis, your local Yamaha dealer can get you those skis, but I don`t know about the price. A pair of those ski`s will cost you a little over 200$ + shipping, from the US.
Ask your dealer how much they are and if its to expensive get them from the US.
I will be getting new skis soon for the Viper so I can keep you posted.
This morning before I went to work I went out to fiddle alittle with the Viper.
My plan was to remove the carbides and grind of the weld that the previous owner welded onto them. Here`s a pic:
But I realized it would take ages to grind off.. and since the season is basicall over I figured there was no point in doing it, will replace thm when I get new skis anyway.
I then attached the front part of the plastic ski to the ski, they were rattling around when I rode, annoying.
I then removed this knob on the handlebar:
This way I can tilt the handlebar more forward, the riding position got SOO much better.
Yesterday I did a fast polish on the tunnel & floorboards. But I will do a proper polish job later on.
Today I got new sparkplugs and new mainjets for it, 156.3. The previous owner had leaned it out a little, two steps he said. I will go back to stock jets to stay on the safe side.
This morning the sled started on the 1st pull without choke, had been sitting over the night. That`s nice!!. As it started I thought "Yamaha".
Wellwell thats all for now.. .

I agree with SRX Rider that this could be a pretty cool paint job on a Red Viper. G.B.

Daman: OK sounds cool.. will consider it.. will be friendly to the wallet compared to a new color paint job.
Gone_Blue: that was an awesome paint job idea.. . Could probably order some stock decals for a newer sled and just put them on.. .
92vwgti: Thanks man! . It has a 365cm (144) 51mm (2inch) track. Yes it has reverse.
I can`t say anything about the suspension yet because I havent got to test it properly yet.. . Hopefully I can say some more after this weekend.
I can tell you my opinion later on, Viper MTN VS MM700.. .
