srx engine in viper chassis

yes, it will bolt right in, the only thing you will have to do is alter the exh system to fit, the manifold patterns for single pipe are way differnt, exh. port length is differnt. You could just swap in the srx triple pipes with some fabrication skills.

Youll also have to do some work on the cooling system(hoses), as the viper uses a dffernt thermostat housing and extra front heat exchanger outlet, rad. hose set up, but thats not too terrible bad to alter.

This is all assuming your swapping in a 2000-02 srx eng, the 98-99 will need to have the stator and flywheel updated to the 300 watt set up the viper uses.

Go to the top of the screen and click on search, scroll down to advanced search and type in BETHEVIPER under Search by User Name.

He has done this and has lots of informative posts on the subject.

So basically since I blew up my 2002 viper I can just use most of the parts from that guy? (stator & flywheel) I've been looking for a used Viper motor but cannot seem to find one and the headlights are brighter, suspension tach etc. the 99 srx just is getting worn out and I'll be doing a top-end rebuild on it so thought I'd give it a try. Thanks

its gonna be involved.! If your using a 98-99 srx engine your gonna have to relocate the pick up coil as the flywheel is smaller on the viper. if you dont the air gap will be too big and youll have no spark. If the viper engine cases are still good you could install the srx crank into the viper cases and reuse the end bearings off the viper crank on the srx crank. it will all bolt right back in, that will take care of the bottomend.

the cylinders are going to take some work as the exh port is a differnt bolt pattern and a differnt length.

no offense intended... but if your not a good fabricator this swap isnt gonna be for you. Your better off finding good viper cylinders/head to put back in it if your not into fabrication.

I have 3 good viper cylinders if you are going that route. Im sure others do as well. There are plenty of parts to get it going again here. Find the parts you will need and send it to Mrviper. He'll set you up. Thats what i did (twice).

Thanks MrViper. got one question I'm a bit confused on. As far as stator, can I use the Viper's old one on the 98 SRX engine? I cleaned it up and then after I realized the gap was too far for the pickup coil I used the SRX flywheel. Probably why I cannot get it fired and sounds like it's mis-firing. Just need clarification on the stator as to whether or not I can use the old viper one or have to buy a new 300w one? Thanks for all your input. Josh

no, it wont work because the old 98-99 flywheel only has 3 magnets on it and the viper one has 4, so the ign timing is all wrong. The only way you can get around moving the ign pick up coil is to use a flywheel off of a 2001 sxr700 engine. Or ,move the ign pick up coil with a bracket or weld some dabs of aluminum on case, drill and tap them to hold the pick up coil closer to the viper flywheel, you need it to be around a .025" airgap.

Thanks mrviper. I relocated the points pickup and had it running. Everything works except the low beam and I have the flashing check engine light. This was before I swapped CDI with the 01 srx unit. I haven't put the exhaust back together to try again. Any thoughts?

well for the headlight i wuld check to make sure the bulb is good and for power at the bulb plug while on low beam, could be in the dimmer switch as well.

for the flashing youd need to count the flashes and look up the code.

i dont understand what your doing with the srx cdi box right now, and whats on it for exhaust?

Anybody every heard of how to get rid of the flashing engine light? I have not ran since I put a 01 SRX CDI in but I've heard I may need to splice a wire or run it "in line" to get rid of it? Just wondering if anyone heard of this?

u need to cure the reason why it flash and it will stop ....;)! count the flash it will give u the trouble

Someone told me I need to put an 01 srx CDI box on or the engine will fry. I've checked the bulbs, switch seems fine so will check for power... Also thanks for the help with the check engine light. Happy Riding

I brought over the triple stock pipes

sounds like the temp sensor wire. Now I haven't read the entire thread thoroughly so I don't know everything you've done so far but when you put SRX pipes on the Viper engine with the SRX CDI you need to use a resistor inline for the water temp sensor. This fools the CDI into thinking everything is A.O.K. What I don't recall is what wire off the CDI it goes on or the ohms of the resistor needed. Mrviper has my old SRX/Viper pipes, I had the wiring written down on the bag the resistor was in. I also don't know if this was necessary simply because of the wiring of the Viper harness or ???

I never put any resistor at all for my cluster ...not sure why some put resistor

OK, it is One long flash, and three short (in a row). Any one see anything like that? I did take out the water temp sensor from the manifold on the viper. I also have a half tank of gas. Does it seem odd that I had to adjust the idle on the carbs even though the engine/carbs are the same??? Just wondering. Was idling at 4,000 and brought it down to about 1,800. Carbs got cleaned etc. I was able to get the low beam working. There was a wire that doesn't lead to the bulb(s) but the insulation had been broken and corroded. I ended up cutting it out a splicing it and next startup she game on. Probably happening because of the triple pipes I brought over from the SRX is my guess???

the 1 long and 3 short is the water temp sensor short code. Like stagss said, you need to use a resistor and place it in a wire when going from the viper to srx cdi box on a viper wire harness. search for concept carbon, all the information will be in his thread for the viper to srx conversion.

the carbs look the same and are the same size but the viper is a leaner set up then the srx is on the needles and nozzles. the slides are differnt also for the cut away which will effect the idle speed setting.

modsrx didnt need it because he started with a srx first not a viper harness.
