Stator Removal

Does anyone have any hints on how to remove the stator philips drive screws? I have a brand new P3 screw driver and all I have managed to do is strip out the drive recess in these screws? I am looking for any ideas as I was hoping that drilling out the screws would be my last option.

use the bit on an impact drill.,should help.As for the stripped head,they have special screw out bits that cut into the screw head on a reverse of the drill.But they don't always work.I have 2 sets of these devices.But if the screws are siezed..then you got some work cut out for youself.That would get my blood to boil over,since I can lose my temper fast on the little things.Try a little heat from a propane torch...may help.I have used some heat on some things that just wouldn't move and was surprised by the results.Just don't destroy other things with the heat.
 
use an impact driver with #3 bit and should come right out, even if it is a bit mangled. in a pinch,worst case scenario, maybe some baby vice grips with a TIGHT grip but i would try the impact driver 1st.
 
Thanks Blue and Bolin for your quick suggestions. I guess I will have to call my buddy so I can borrow his compressor and impact driver. One of these day I will own one myself. I just cant stand Philips drive screws. They frustrate the h_ _l out of me!

Phillips to Hex...only way to go

When you re-assemble, replace the Phillips with Hex head screws...makes it much easier the next time you take it apart...

I think what bolin22 was talking about was not an air driven impact driver.. this is how it works

1. Get proper size bit and turn the handle until it's tight (the handle will turn while the bit doesn't... building tension)
2. Hold grip tight and hit the end with a hammer... the driver will give a slight turn and break the bolt free
3. Crack a beer and go to the next one.
 
Cool, I guess it's off to Harbor Freight. I was happy my Harbor Freight $9.00 48 pc. universal puller kit worked great for removing the fly wheel. I will be repacing these screws for sure with either a hex head or Torx pan head. I am sure that corrosion is the reason they are so hard to remove. Thanks to all! G.B.

No problem. You can usually tell by looking at the Harbor Freight stuff to see if it will work or not. I have bought a few of their tools and they seem to work for the one or two times I will ever need them. If I needed to use a tool all the time I would look elsewhere.

if that sosent work i have in the past used a dremel and cut a slot in a screw and took it out with a flat blade. there is one thing worse than a phillips it a torx that get corroded in the derby cover on my harley was a biatch to get off last summer.
