hey guys, just changed out my pistons and noticed on middle and pto cylinders one side of the crank, near the rod bearing is blue in color. is this normal on the triples or did I overheat the crank bearings and should I be worried?

the runout on it is good, and the bearings in the rod look fine and feel smooth, however i did break one piston and stick the rings on the other 2 without finding any problems due to running lean or out of oil......

I also never ran the engine lean or in the red for temp (i have a guage) could it have been partly air locked or something? should I not try to start her up?
Seal?
How about a bad seal somewhere letting air in and leaning it out? Or, maybe that NOS you were running was doing more damage than you thought?

Is the crank welded? Could be discoloration from welding the crank pins.

Don't get your panties in a bunch. All the SX 700's I have worked on have blue cranks. I thought the same thing you did back in 2001 when I put reed spacers in my SXR-700. I could see a blue color on the crank near the rod. I asked on TY and my dealer showed me a few other cranks that we all blue just like mine. It's normal and was done at the factory, most likely by some heat treating process. Doug

awesome, glad to hear that, all the ones I have seen, both 600's and 700's were blue on one side of the rod only, leading me to believe it has not overheated. she's up and running again now and so far so good........
