I have a question that I'm hoping someone can answer definitively for me...I was installing a new set of carbides to my 02 Viper yesterday and when I was tightening the 4 nuts that hold the carbide to the ski one of the bolt legs (the very front one) snapped on me. Now the carbide is in place and seems pretty snug and well fit but is this carbide going to last seeing as it's only tightened with the back 3 nuts and bolts now? I thought it would still be okay but a friend said he thought the front bolt leg would be the most important of the four. Is this going to be okay for me or does anyone even know?

THanks

no it won't hold. I tried it on my very first muni ride. i broke a stud on a very hard snow bank. It wasn't 15 minutes later yhe carbide was sticking straight out the side, and we were working on it in the dark in the middle of nowhere. Take it off and weld the stud back on. Maxdlx

im gonna go with max on this one...with that front stud broke off, it wont take much to have that thing looking like the letter L. If it was the one in the back, you might be able to get by.

Matt, Whose carbides are they? (Don't say either!) Contact the manufacturer and ask them if they could repair it or replace it, especially if they're brand new... Just a thought, Or if you want to fix it yourself then thats up to you. T

The manufacturer wont replace it unless you can show that it was a manufacturer defect. Most likely, it broke because it was tightened too much. Carbides do not need to be cranked real tight, and the studs are very soft and snap easily, which is what they are designed to do if they catch something solid. Just take it off, weld the stud back on and reinstall.

Thanks alot guys...I will try to get new ones from the manufacturer but it was my fault for overtightening and if they won't budge I won't push it. I will simply weld the broken stud back on and reinstall. Again, thx.

Good snow conditions(trails), no problem. Throw in some rocks/poor snow and its a problem. I have a nice letter L that went all of last season but only two days this year, lots of rocks where we were.
