What do you guys think about aftermarket heads? Do they shorten the life of a motor? I'm just throwing some ideas for next year. I've had a lot of guys say don't bother with it. I don't really want to do anything that'll kill my motor.

engine mods in general shorten the life of a motor.....its just how well you treat it

Actually aftermarket heads are a good idea on engines that make significantly more power than stock because cooling is typically better in the aftermarket heads because they utilize stepped domes to increase the surface area available for contact with the coolant. Get a set of peak performance heads if you can find some. Domes needed will depend on engine mods, conditions being ridden in, and fuel quality.

Thanks for you're help. That's exactly what I wanted to know. Also has anyone gotten heads from Speedwerx? I've seen them advertised through Pioneer Performance. Should I be concerned with squishbands? I'm starting to understand what it is, but with lack of experience I don't want to make a mistake with this purchase.

as a rule of thumb for yamahas anyway u want atleast a 50 tho squish to run pump gas(92) around 60 to be safe. other factors make a contribution but if ur are just going to run a shaved/high compression head as long as u run premium u should be fine. ive shaved the heads on my 2 sleds xtc 500 and sxr 700 with no detination ploblems. aslong as u run the right oct for ur compression souldnt be a problem.
