2001 SRX Chaincase Question

Hi all. I have a question for you pertaining to the chaincase on my 2001 SRX 700. I have searched this forum, checked the Yamaha Shop Manual, and the Yamaha parts microfiche but have failed to find my answer. I am driving myself crazy trying to figure out if I have lost a piece of this assembly. Here goes:

Within the chaincase there are two seals (jackshaft and driveshaft). On the jackshaft there is a collar with a single o-ring inside of it that looks like it serves as a spacer for the brake rotor. If I am correct, this collar sits inside the seal.

Now, moving down to the driveshaft seal there is a similar looking collar also with a single o-ring inside of it. This collar sits on the driveshaft and within the driveshaft seal.

Having said all of this, it seems to me that when I took everything apart there was ANOTHER collar that was wider than the two mentioned above. This collar had TWO groves machined inside of it, but only one of the grooves had an o-ring while the other groove was bare.

So, my question is, does this mystery collar that I speak about in the paragraph directly above actually exist or am I dreaming? As I began to assemble everything I looked for the mystery collar and couldn't find it anywhere. The manuals and parts microfiche DO NOT show this mystery collar.

Perhaps I am hallucinating? Someone please set me straight.

Hi man!

I understand that you are confused, I often get confused myself.
I guess the chaincase on an SRX has the same parts as an MM, and on the MM there is the collar on the driveshaft that fits against the seal, and there is the one on the inside of the chaincase that spaces the lower gear out from the case.

In one of the pics you can see the lower gear collar and in the other one you only see the top collar (+ the other parts).

I don`t think your collar excist.

I could be wrong tho, it`s funny how fast one forget stuff.

I took a look at your links and you did a great job of documenting everything! I have continued to pour over Yamaha literature and I am strongly beginning to think that the mystery collar I thought I had really does not exist.

By my most recent count, there are four (4) collars/spacers located within the chaincase. Two of these spacers/collars go directly behind the gears (small spacer/big gear and big spacer/small gear). These collars/spacers DO NOT have an o-ring inside them.

The other two collar/spacers sit inside each chaincase seal; one collar for each seal. These collars/spacers both feature the internal o-ring. Yamaha literature shows me different part numbers for these collars/spacers, but I know which goes where so there is no problem.

In other words, I am now _pretty sure_ that the mystery collar was a figment of my imagination.

Still, if someone reads this post could you please confirm its accuracy just so I am absolutely sure. Thanks!
 
^^^ Yeah must be from smoking that cheap stuff... 2 with oil seals and 2 spacers for the gears. :winterrul did you find it in the bottom of the sled?

Hey Tony, if all you did was change the gears I don't think you even saw the spacers he's talking about. I believe he is talking about the spacers with the o-ring inside that go on the shafts BEHIND the chain case. There is one on top & one on bottom and just as he said they are the spacers that the chain case seals ride against. After the chain case goes on there are two more spacers that go on the shaft before the gears and those are the ones I believe you have refrenced. Sounds to me like he's got it together correctly.

Matt is right on!

You are correct Matt. The spacers I am talking about are located BEHIND the chaincase.

So here's a good one: I got everything back together real clean and minty (new bearings and all). I then went to give my new Ripsaw track a few turns to check for correct installation and found that the track lugs hit the front heat exchanger guard! If I had read this forum before my Ripsaw install, I would have known that this problem would come up.

My options are: 1) Remove track and drive shaft and remove front heat exchanger guard and tunnel protectors. 2) Shave some meat off the lugs of the track. 3) Run it at as is for the first snowfall next winter and let the rubber meet the metal, so to speak.

I think I am going with option 1, as I will never be running studs anyway. It's a ton of extra, repetitive work but my gut says its the right thing to do.

I don't want to use option 2, because I can't bear to hack up a brand new track with a knife or aviation snips.

However, anyone here ever try option 3? I'd love to just leave it together and burn off whatever amount of lugs through friction. I know it's really not the right way to do things, but anyone here have any thoughts?
 
Option one

Definately take out the heat exchanger protection and tunnel protection if you will never run studs. I think you have time before the next snowfall!!!! It may be easier to remove the air box and carbs and get to the rivets on holding the top of the heat exchanger protectors from there. You can put some tape over the carb boots and grind the rivets off from the back side.....then remove the two on the bottom of the protector and wiggle it back and forth until it comes out. Plug the rivet holes under the carbs with a new rivet. You really need to get that stuff off anyway along with the gas tank to do a good job removing the tunnel protectors. You can either do it now or wait until fall when you have to clean your carbs anyway.
