it's powered by a yamaha engine.

Ford contracted yamaha to build a 300hp V6 that they where going to put in a mid-engined supercar, but the marketing guys deamed that the supercar wouldn't be practical with a yamaha engine, as it wouldn't really be the "american supercar" that they wanted to market it as at the time. But the contract for the motors with yamaha had been signed, so they had to find something to put them in. the SHO was the solution (SHO = Super High Output) Was one of the first examples of trans-pacific cooperation by automakers. I still feel that when companies from different countries cooperate, we all end up with a superior product, the SHO is a good example, the newer daimler-chryslers are a good example too. the 300c is an incredible car for what it costs.

ye ye. that has lots of potential....when the sho's were produced they were faster then the mustang so they were detuned to make the mustang look faster.

The SHO limit was from not having a front wheel drivetrain that could take the power & rpm of the SHO. They made a man trans that could take power, but not the full rpm of the SHO. Thats why it was limited and no auto trans for the first few years.

Yamaha wanted a joint engine plant, ford did not. Ford was working on the modular program and yamaha didn't fit in the program.

Sorry, I fail to see how it is related to yamaha?

Yamaha made the intake manifold and exhausts as well as some work with the heads. The block is still made by Ford and so is the crank, but they handed the engine over to Yamaha. Looks like a really nice ride. We still see quite a few of these come through the dealership (mostly for tranny's) Some of the early SHO's had a YAMAHA insignia in place of the little blue oval "FORD" on the front and the back of the car.
