Have a 2000 sxr with psi triple pipes. one layer removed from the head gasket. i already have an srx rear cooler installed. i found that it runs kinda hot normally around 140-150 and in low snow even up to 165 ish. maybe it's not that hot but to me it seems warm. my srx with porting work runs less than 130 all the time. anyways just curious if this is alright or is there a way to cool it better? i also run redline water wetter in my sxr did notice it helps a bit.

ya, thats too warm.
what kind of anti freeze/water mixture are you running?
the sxr coolers are smaller then a srx is, the running board ones could be changed out for a guy adding alot more power..........
you might also check you have good flow thru them this summer. Ususally there isnt much problem with the sx,sxr and adding pipes etc. With the srx rear cooler i would think it should be fine. check the flow with a garden hose, maybe theres some junk in there??

thanks for the reply Don, i will do a complete flush before next season. did think it was a little warm. my mixture is the standard 60/40 called for in the manual. do you know if adding srx running board coolers is a direct fit ? like if the nipples at the front line up in the same spot and whatnot? i know i'd have to redrill for new rivet holes and stuff but wondering if the rest lines up. other than that i guess there's not much else i can do to keep her cool. aftermarket heads help at all? any aftermarket gaskets like the bender opticool for the viper that you know of?

by adding the pipes you increased h.p. by approx. 23%. you also increased compression which adds even more heat. 2 cycles like hot pipes & cool motors. call bender racing & order a tunnel cooling kit. i have this installed on both my 800 sx & 835 srx trail sleds & have never had a cooling issue. on a warm day i can blast down the canadian lakes, open the hood & hold my hand on the head or cylinder & they are only warm.

Your question
To answer your question about whether or not it is a direct fit........yes and no. The coolers themselves will line right up and rivet in but the hoses are different. SRX & Viper used 3/4" hoses and the old red head models used 1/2". This can be shimmed by placing about a 2" piece of the 1/2" hose over the metal tube then putting the 3/4" hose over that and clamping it all together with a good hose clamp. Sounds like a terrible cob job but once you do it you'll see it's really not that bad. I will add though that I do not think somply changing the running board coolers is going to cure your problem.

ya i knew about the hoses that's what i had to do when i added the srx rear exchanger. never had a problem with leaks just double hose clamped it. i was just worried about lining up and riveting in place. thanks for the info guys.

You are probubly better off using a radiator out of a new Apex GT with the little cooling fan..A friend of mine put one in his Viper..

Am I missing something here? 165*F doesn't seem any too warm at all. What is the issue here?

well my original post was just trying to see if it was too warm. and the opinion was that it is.

Really? Oh yea I see Mrviper thinks it is. Hmmm. Our apex's and attak's all run around 180*F in normal conditions with stock cooling system (and the 60/40 antifreeze removed). Personally I dont think you have a problem but i dont want to step on anyone's toes.

ya might be different for a 4 stroke you gotta figure car thermostats are rated for temps that normally start around 160-175

Well naturally you are going to make more power with a cooler engine. 2 strokes in general like cool engine temps and HOT exhaust temps. However you are by no means in any sort of danger zone with 165 degree temps.

ya the cooler the better so i'm gonna try the srx running board coolers and see what happens. i'd like it to run less than 130f like my srx does.
