My question is:
Who has switched from their 2 stroke sled and gone the 4 stroke way?
Do you regret the decision?

went from a 00 sxr 600 to an 05 Vector and no regrets at all. No smoke, awesome fuel economy, electric start, no injector oil, much better suspension.
It took the first season to learn how to dial in the suspension for handling but that's done now
I ride mostly Quebec trails and don't get off trail into the jumps so the little extra weight is not noticeable.
I miss the sweet triple sound though.

I made the switch this past season. I had a 99 MM700 with a 151 track, PI pipes, reeds, taller bars, and all kinds of other goodies to update this sled to more modern mountain sled standards. I bought the MM new and put over 9000 miles on it and never opened up the motor. I loved the old MM but it was starting to fall behind all of my buddies sleds on the hill. It was time for a change but I wanted a two stroke and Yamaha didnt make them anymore. A buddy rides an 04 RX-1 Mountain (stock) and my old MM could run circle around it. I almost jumped ship and went to another brand because of this.
I read all the good stuff the magazines and everybody had to say about the Apex Mountain and thought this might be the sled for me. So in January I took the plunge and bought an 07 Apex Mountain SE without even having a test ride on it.
I cant say enough good things about the Apex. Everybody complains about the weight, yet anybody I let ride it is amazed how easy it is to throw around and how well balanced it is. It rides and climbs much, much, much better than MM700. It is so nice to just turn a key and start it on the coldest of mornings. While all my buddies are filling the sleds with oil and pulling the rope, I'm out laying first tracks in the powder. Everybody has a bad feeling toward the heavy Yamaha four strokes until they ride my Apex and see what it can do. Everybody in my group which has Cats, Doos, and two stroke Yamahas is amazed with what the Apex can do and it is bone stock unlike the modded sleds they ride.
All this being said, and I could go on and on, I love everything about my Apex and have not regreted making the switch to the four stroke in the least bit.

Thanks for the replies.
Looks like I'm buying an 07 Apex rtx. Just a little hesitant on getting rid of my old girl.
Its really a weird feeling to want a new sled so bad, but not want to give up something you worked so many hrs on and had so much fun on.

I currrently own 9 sleds. 8 two strokes and 1 ATTAK. ALL my two strokes are going byebye. Attak averages just under 16 mpg on 87 fuel. Viper gets 10 on premium ( slight porting, longtrack and gear change). My riding partner has a Rage. Gets 29 mpg average on 87 fuel. And it runs right with the Viper everywhere except offtrail. I will be replacing my 01 700 venture with a four stroke Venture. Better mileage, no oil, better ride. And if I decide to run it off trail, that 144 will come in REAL handy LOL!!
Sorry guy's, but I'll have to stick with my '05 Viper Mtn for a while longer. I got the wife an '07 Vector Mtn after dumping her '07 Phazer GT, and she loves it. I rode the Vector several times last season, and I just can't get past the weight, handling, throttle-off diving, etc. My Viper will run circles around it. Maybe someday, but I won't be a 4-stroke convert anytime soon. I don't see where "mileage" is a problem either. I ride for fun, not the expense.

If you get a chance to try an FX Nytro, you should. The engine braking reduction works very good at eliminating most of the weight transfer when letting off, it was one of the first things I noticed in the test drive. It may not be right for you but you owe it to yourself to try it.
On to the topic at hand.
I'll be on my first four stroke this season and expect nothing but smiles. I'm tired of buying oil and being the guy in the group now spending the most on fuel, cept for the cats. Dad went 4-stroke for 06 (vector GT) and LOVES the mileage and the mono. Finds it a little heavy steering when the trails have a hard set, but he is 66 this November. May try a different ski eventually.

There IS NOT a better (DO IT ALL!!) sled out there than the RX, Apex, Vector sleds period!! I own a 03 RX1 limited and 92 Vmax-4 along with several other specailty 2 strokes and love them all but if I could only have one sled it would be a 4 cylinder Yamaha 4 stroke. You won't always be in the lead and you will work up a sweat once and awhile but you will be right there and nothing will be able to just run away from you. Even the guys who don't like them can't give alot of reason for their opinion. Most of the complaints are the same "to heavy, to slow, ski lift, won't corner". I'm 6ft 170lbs and have never found weight a problem (but I've never had to push it home either). If you look at the numbers there is not that much difference between them and most equalivant 2 stroke trail sleds. I'm not sure where the "slow" comments apply as we do alot of high speed river running and my 03 RX will run with or ahead of almost anything out there. Yea there is ski lift when you are getting nasty in the corners but once you get used to it it is fun and much better than a sled that wants to push through a corner. To me just being along for the ride is boring and I actually enjoy climbing out on the front fender in a tight corner. Once you get the hang of it you'll keep up with them all and be able to go around alot of them. The cornering goes along with ski lift and once it is setup for your riding style it will get it done as well as most.
I think the biggest problem is that people want to compare them to what they are riding instead of what they are built to do. They are all somewhat different to ride than a 2 stroke but if you have an open mind and really feel one out you should like it if not love it.
The bottom line is that these Yamaha 4 strokes are not the best at anything but are so strong with everything that they are hard to beat. If you had a football team with all the players as durable and qualified as these 4 strokes you would never loose.
Just my 2 cents, Phil (opsled)

i for one never had a problem with the pro action skid on the sx500r i ran untill last season. it was the fuel milage that did me in. 8miles to the gallon gets expensive when you are running with piped sx700r and srx that fill once to my 3 times. yes the sxr was tricked out sweet and there are days i still miss that little bugger. i upgraded last season to a 2005 rxwarior limited edition. i love the fuel milage and the power. i was just getting the suspension dialed in when we ran out of snow. it currently has 1500km on it and just keeps getting better on power and fuel milage. i would own a viper if i could have found a noncurrent one when i was shopping but i am very happy with what i have and look forward to the current riding season.

I had to be one of the last holdouts - not wanting to accept "the 4stroke", well in 05 I picked up a nice used 03 RX-1 and fell in love with it, and let me tell ya the new iron is sooo much better than that 03. I now own an 07 Attak GT and the wife rides an 06 Vector GT, I will never go back.
Sure there is a slight weight penalty and of course I would like a lighter 4 stroke, but other brands make waaay to much out of the weight. Most of these guys craving the lightest sleds made ride the same groomed trails I do. We are basically 80% trail and 20% boon dockers and in all but the roughest sections you will never feel the weight, Yamaha has done a fantastic job of building a stable balanced and extremly reliable machine and I dont miss the 2 strokes at all.
