The vmax540 I'm putting on ice this winter has the 108 commet primary. Not knowing where to start with this clutch, what do you guys think between Thundershift or heavy Hitters? I would have to spend the big bucks and end up with something that is sub par!

You can buy used thundershifts very inexpensively. They have the standard pol/ac profile & are very tuneable with the 3 hole weights. These are a real overlooked weight for lower hp sleds. Base weight is very lite at around 40 grams but work awesome when properly dialed in.

i have a set of these that i will get rid of for $50 shipped, they have the bolts and washers with them, and a clutch holding tool for changing weights without taking the clutch off the sled. i bought these used and have not used them since my sled has to way to much hp for them.

They came with 102's and the 108 is a larger diameter clutch so you will likely run into compatability issues with the 108 and the stock secondary. The Vmax 540 also has a different bore depth on the taper than anything else so you can run into alignment problems with a clutch that was not bored for the Vmax. There has been alot of discussion on the vintagevmax forum of the issue of 108's not performing well on the 540. I've got about ten of them here and all the ones that had a 108 have a burn mark on the primary about 1/2" down from the top. I say it is due to the belt bottoming in the secondary before it reaches the top of the primary. We fixed the problem by removing some material from the back side of the stock secondary helix so it can open farther. Some say they have also had trouble with spring bind and installed hight issues. Others say they are having very good luck with their setups. I'm running a Polaris setup on my mod from an XLT but it isn't done or dialed. Check out vintagevmax.com and search for (clutch) you will find alot of stuff to help screw up your mind.
