Stator taking a crap on it? The early 700 red head's didnt have very good stators in them and would often fail, and often it was very sensitive to temperature changes. Otherwise make sure the choke plungers are moving fully. Verify that the pilots are clean and the right size. Put fuel screws at 2 to 2-1/4 turns if stock. Make sure the throttle cable is adjusted right, then adjust the idle correctly. Also make sure there is no water in the tank or the floatbowls. Sometimes that will make a sled hard to start but fine once its going. Crappy gas can do a lot of weird things.
all most every time a stator is bad they work good when cold and fail when warmed up, they would take alot of pulls to get started once warmed up.
You have the opposite problem here, I would look at the choke plungers, choke cable adjustment, like posted.
