What is the best kind of rivet to use on the tunnel of a snowmobile? Is there one kind better than the other, aluminum or steel, how large? Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks

I use both types of rivets.Steel is probably stronger for certain applications.

Well the ones we use on our aircraft rang from aluminum to stainless. Some of them are similar to pop-rivets but are alot stronger and are about $1.00ea. If you are going to be ataching a steel mount you would want to use steel. As for the size you want to fill the exicting hole if not go over one size. I use alot of solid rivets that you have to use a rivet gun on them, similar to a air hammer. If you need photos of them or anything more let me know. Go talk to your small town air port mechanic they will know what I am talking about.

yamaha sleds are put together with steel multigrip(avex) rivots in the frame. aluminum multigrip in the bellypans, and steel monobolt on the trailing arm mounts.
i sell the aluminum bellypan rivots and the steel frame rivots for .15c each plus 5$ shipping.
the frame rivots will only do two layers of metal. where you frame has three layers you will need to buy the yamaha rivots, there are very few places.
you will want a hydralic or air/hydralic rivot gun to use the steels, even the aluminums are brutal.
pm me if you need some, 10 or a 100

I have some "Q-Rivets" from JayCee Sales (www.rivetsinstock.com) They are part numbers SSPQ-06-04 and SSPQ-06-06 with grip ranges of 1/8" to 1/4" and 1/4" to 3/8", both are 3/16" steel rivets with steel mandrels. I have used them for attaching the front cooler and protectors to the tunnel and for a tunnel extension.
I had to buy a minimum lot of 100 of each so I have some extra to sell to ya if interested.
I would sell them for $0.20 each plus shipping.
You definitely need a pneumatic riveter, I tried by hand with a riveter with 12" handles and it was a no-go.
