Just wondering what the effect of installing a primary clutch with a different taper offset would have on engine reliability. My 600 twin needs bushings, again, and would like to use a TRA I can get my hands on for free. Other than the physical part of realigning and tuning is there anything detrimental? Will it have too much offset and interefere with the crankcase? Was also thinking about the clutch from a vmax-4(~-.200 offset),is that too far the other way?
Enquiring dumbass would like to Know.

The first thing you need to do is make sure the taper is the same. If it's not - that kills it right there. IMO - Save your time and $ and get a different clutch or fix yours.

I run a TRA on my V-Max 4.... If the tapper on the clutch you have is the same, give it a try. The TRA has a lot of adjustments available. Works great on my modded 800...

I guess that is really part of the question. The majority of the clutches available are 30mm 1:10 taper, but offsets are all over the place. Alignment issues can for the most part be corrected(unless it actually interfers with the engine) but am i going to burn out a crank end bearing if clutch sits 6 mm farther in or out?
Does bad stuff happen if the offset is not as original?

The depth of the taper is important. Try looking at a comet application chart and see if they list the same empty clutch for both applications, otherwise it sounds like you need to make some measurements to find your answer.

From all I've heard, that engine (500, 570, & 600) was known for eating clutches. 800 miles between rebuilds sounds about right. I believe it is a harmonic/vibration issue and is partially solved with a crank balancer/damper. Reichard's (RPC) had a balancer for the 570 EX back in the day which I'm sure would help your situation. I've been looking for one for my EX, but haven't found one yet. Most likely Bender, Hauck, and some of the other speed shops had their own as well. If anyone has one laying around, give me a shout, and I'll take it off your hands for a reasonable fee!
