I have a 2003 RX-1 that needs a track replacement. I am a novice 4-stroke snowmobile repair mechanic but am fairly adept at repairing most other things. I do need a little help in figuring if I can replace my track by myself. What tools does a person need? Is there anything else to consider when replacing the track? Typically, how long does this take? Does anyone know of good manual. Are the ebay ones on cd any good? Any help/insight is greatly appreciated...Thanks!

No special tool required, depends on knowledge should take about 3-5 hrs with a few choice words & beer...LoL...the cd's are great, if you have a laptop in you shop...a manual is more practical...good luck

the tool (special socket) that fits on the top sprocket shaft in the chaincase makes the job a lot easier.

Yup got mine done on my Viper in probably about 5 hrs and 13 beers, thats why it took longer lol No special tools required. I would think its almost the same in doing it.

I did this for the first time on my Viper and felt the way you did at first. From my experience it wasn't bad at all. Some remove the brake and that seems to be trouble. Follow the way that just loosens the chaincase and leaves the brake. Keep track of the jackshaft key!
RX-1 may be different, hope this helps.
edit: good time to check bearings!

does the sled have reverse?!?! that makes it extra fun trying to figure out how to put the chaincase back together. If it does have reverse and you are fairly inexperienced i wouldn't touch it.. it isn't the typical 2 gears, there are 5 i believe and it is quite complicated... take pictures and make sure you have good diagrams to put it back together easier...daneg

you might need a grinder. i know on my srx the bolt flange plate that goes to jackshaft i believe is riveted on factory. that needs grinded off or drilled out whatever you prefer. some might want to correct me if i'm wrong.

I did a sled with reverse a couple years ago - it's not that bad, just keep track of where stuff goes. I took the parking brake off, too - just need a little patience to get it back together.
