I need to replace a bearing in one of the two inner 5.1" something idler wheels in my Viper skid. Does anyone have any tricks to remove these wheels off of the aluminum axle shaft? I am sure that the bearing is corroded onto the aluminum shaft. I used a little liquid wrench and took a few whacks on the wheel with a rubber mallet and it didnt budge.
Thanks, G.B.

you need to put it in a vise, put a piece of wood on the shaft, and wack it real hard. It will come off. Maxdlx

You need 2 V-Blocks that will fit between the 2 wheels and a Press. I just went through this when installing my Pioneer Perf. Hyfax Saver Kit. Also did you remove the snap ring????

Snap ring is out. The assembly does not fit in my vise. Need a bigger vise. Hmmmm, the story of my life. I am trying to decide how bad I want to replace the bearing. The bearing doesnt appear to have a rough spot it just seemed noisy. I had an extra bearing so I thought I would change it out since I had the skid all apart. Thanks, G.B.

I tried the whole removing it from a vise deal, wouldnt work without a bigger vise. Press and V-Blocks

like the upper idlers, i remove the snap ring from the wheel and pound the wheel off the bearing, when you get them off, then you can either fit them in a vise or use a simple jaw puller to grab the bearing.

bearing puller
i just swapped my bearings out and a vise would not work so i loaned my buddys bearing puller and it came off but it was rusted on there so well that even took a little muscle, from the outside it did not look like there was any rust at all but once i got it off there it all was under where the bearing was

You could get yourself a needle fitting for your grease gun and lube up the bearings and see if they quiet down. The small needle will fit between the seal and bearing race to get the grease in there, just a little bit does it.I just did the wheels on my m-10 last night and it worked like a charm, the wheels were just as you described, they turned good ,but were noisy.I had never heard of this until I read it in my m-10 manual which they say to do this every year. The local auto parts store had to order that needle fitting, its as small as a medical needle in which everything they had was quite a bit bigger. This would be easier and cheaper for you, something to think about.Gone Blue said:Snap ring is out. bearings
you will have no problem with a bearing puller but if the bearings are noisy you might want to try atf fluid if you can get it into the bearing all the additives should clean out the bearing but make sure you put grease back in after that

marty f, you know after I applied some liquid wrench to the bearing with my first attempt to remove the wheel, I thought that the bearing spun better. So I think I am going to try and inject some new grease into it and see how it goes. Thanks, G.B.

Get it off now. you are going to have to some day and it is only going to get worse IMO. A noisy bearing, is a bearing on it's way out.
