I have a chance to head to the Sandpoint, ID area in late Jan., looking for tips on riding areas, rentals and guides.
I am an experienced flat lander but this will be my first mountain experience and I will have a couple of relative newbies (my hosts) along with me. Would like to hit some areas for scenery and trails but also want some off trail fun for myself for at least a couple hrs a day.
Any input is appreciated..

Do not go off trail by yourself, we do not want to here about you in the news. In the mean time do a dealer seach of the area you want to ride, they can point you in the right direction.

I live about three hours from there, but I have only rode there once, just last year. My sister & brother in law live there. The area we rode (already can't remember name of it) was kind of small, but had some decent riding. The snow conditions were near perfect, about a foot of powder on a good base, although it was later in the season so the best hill climbs I saw were too unstable to play on. You could actually see at the top where it had cracked and started to slide. These climbs were right off the trail just before it kind of topped out into some clear cut areas that were fun to play in. It was the kind of area that you found a place to sit and play for a couple of hours, and then went and found another spot to do the same. Kind of a different crowd up there riding. There were some pretty tricked/modded out sleds, but there were few tracks in the places we were climbing/playing. Guess they were afraid of wrecking there expensive sleds, lol. You had to get there by around 7-7:30 or else parking was very tight.
I will try to catch up with my brother in law and get the names of a few riding areas, and maybe some rental places. He works long hours during the day and I work the same on nights, so it can be tough to contact him sometimes. It may take me a few days to try to contact him and respond back.

Thanks, any info is appreciated. Don't worry as I won't be venturing out too far alone and won't be busting new trail. I anticipate any "alone" riding being pulling off the trail for some hill climbs and playing in powder fields while the others watch while sitting on the trail. At least I hope they stay on trail as I don't want to dig them out, I am sure my own will be enough work.
I heard they got a foot of snow on the mountain in the past day and a half, above 5000ft. anyway. Sure would be nice to see that looking out the office window or better yet not from an office window.

Haven't caught up with him yet, as luck would have it he's on vacation this week at his parents cabin. He'll be home Friday evening.
Yeah, I heard that Sweitzer (spelling?) ski hill got some snow, not sure how much.
That area I went to doesn't get groomed, so if there's a bunch of fresh snow you might want to make sure some other groups leave ahead of you. The trail could be a PIA for not very experianced riders with you.

Ok, sorry it took so long.
The place we rode is called Trestle Creek.
There is also a place called Romanose, think the spelling is right on that one.
You can also go to Priest Lake, which is regarded as the best riding in northern Idaho by most.
As far as rentals, he wasn't positive about anywhere in Sandpoint. He suggested you try calling North Idaho R.V. which is in Sagle (couple miles from Sandpoint). He thinks they might rent Ski-doos. He said he knows there are rentals in Priest Lake, but didn't know the name of any of the places that do rent.
Hope this helps.

My sister has been searching for a rental place, think she found the one in Sagle. No matter the place she did find rents Pol and Doo 550's for $250 a day, yuck! We are thinking Priest Lake right now. More digging to be done. I told her I want more sled for that kind of money!
Thanks again for your help!

That sucks, I don't blame you wanting more ponies for that price. You may have trouble finding anywhere that will rent out very "big" sleds, probably a lot higher liability for them to get much bigger cc's than 600 or so. If they do have any bigger, they will probably be two-ups rather than performance oriented. Good luck with the search.
