I know threads have been started on this before but I cant find anything too helpful. I wear glasses and contacts arent an option. I need a new helmet and was wondering what anyone has for recomendations?? Open face or closed doesnt matter. Someone has to be in the same boat as me..

I like the helmet/google style. I wear glasses and discovered that googles designed to go over glasses are available. Works good for me.

I think that modular would be the way to go. Its a lot easier to get your glasses on with a modular helmet because of the flip-up design.
Im personally not a fan of glasses with goggles. I used to wear glasses but dont anymore and my brother wears glasses. I found that even OTG (over-the-glasses) goggles still push your glasses into your face. My brother had the same problem until he started wearing contact lenses.
Another option would be to get a set of Pro-Vue goggles. Basically what they do is embed lenses with your prescription into a goggle lens, so you dont need to wear glasses under your goggles. I think Oakley also does something similar to this with their goggles as well. This option is kinda pricey though, they go for about $200.
Heres the website that tells you all you could ever want to know: http://www.pro-vue.com/snow.html
Thats actually a pretty cool setup even if you dont wear glasses. They sell goggles with lenses that are non-prescription that have snaps on the outside and they sell different tinted outside lenses that just snap on and snap off. Pretty cool idea and its a lot easier than trying to wrestle a lense out of and then back into a goggle frame.

Glasses

I have been in the same situation as you for years. I first would ride with an open faced helmet with poor results at best. I spent the money and purchased a Modular helmet ( Ski-Doo ) and can tell you wow. I never realized how poor my visibility was. I have been in the modular for three years and it works great. Only problem is the breath holes froze up with chunks of ice on me on a -15 degree day but I just cleared the ice and was off again. Never had the problem in temps to -5 but at -15 it did ice up. With the breath exiting the sides of the helmet my vision has been great and it is warm also. Spend the $$, you will never regret you did. My 2 cents. Pat

Sounds like what I had expected so far. I like the idea of open face, but modular always seems to prevail. I guess I will have to figure out how much I can/want to spend for one and take it from there.

Sparta, what model of ski doo helmet do you have?? Is it electric shield? what exactly is it that makes a modular better, just the ease of putting glasses on with it or is the ventilation much better?

Keep em coming, the more responses the more info!!

Why are'nt contacts an option? I gave up trying to wear glasses a couple years ago and bought some disposable contacts. I really ony wear them snowmobiling. I cannot believe I struggled trying to ride with glasses for so long.

they never sit on my eye properly. They pop out and get blurry all the time. I ride mostly at night too which is poor enough vision as it is. I rode one season with them and had badly blurred vision and lost contacts while riding.. not good.

maxout,

I have the same problem and have been wearing a Doo modular helmet for the last 3 years with good success. I have never had the modular fog up even without an electric shield but from time to time my glasses still fog inside the helmet. My only defense to this is controlled breathing.
I have tried contacts before with limited success because they move around and things get blurry. That is until I tried the latest contacts... Acuvue from johnson & johnson. They stay put and work great. Looking forward to this winter without glasses. Finally after 5 yrs of trying different brands.

I think I tired acuvue and they still gave me blurred vision.. I will have to look into it. I think the skidoo module is the way I will be going. thanks guys!!

I also wear glasses and use a full face helmet. What works for me is get rid of the breath delector, this works for the glasses and use an electric shield. Very few issues.

I wouldnt say the Doo modular is the only way to go. Ive got a Polaris modular that works well. Mine is an plain black model and if you didnt know better you would never be able to tell its a Polaris helmet. The only thing about it didnt like was the mask. Its basically like what a fighter pilot wears and its very hard to get it to snap in and stay snapped. I found that a lot of the time when you would close the front of the helmet it would come unsnapped. I simply tossed the mask in the trashcan, bought a heated shield and problem solved. I can ride in freezing rain or freezing fog and have no issues with vision.
Also, HJC and Z1R make modular helmets now that cost under $200. Thatd be the way I would go. IMO, the gizmos that the BRP modular has arent worth the extra $100. The only thing I would miss with the HJC and Z1R helmets is the flipdown sunshield. Its great because it cuts down the glare off of the snow when you are riding in bright sunshine and it makes it very easy to adjust from riding into the woods where its shaded and then coming out onto a lake or other open area where its bright sunshine.
I personally love the way that a motocross style helmet looks, but you cant beat the warmth and funtionality of a modular.

I use the Ski-Doo modular. It is the older style with the breath deflector like a pilot wears. I see no need for a heated sheild when using the breath shield, everything goes out the sides. I never had the shield fog. My glasses will fog slightly when I sit at a corner or am waiting for a long period but I just crack the outer lense and the fog is cleared instantly when underway. All I can say is try one. If you are clostrafobic ??? the modular is very confined and some guys dont like that. I bought mine used because the guy did not like the confined feel. There are used helmets out there at real good prices. My son has a Snow Force and likes it but when I am not riding, my helmet is on him. Like I said it is a whole different story with a modular. I have not tried the Polaris style but if it has the breath exiting the side like the Doo it should work as well but I do know the Ski-Doo Modular works. Good Luck. Pat

I have a gmax full face now and I am beginning to think that it is just poorly designed for deflecting breathe. There is no wholes for my breathe to exit except the bottom of the helmet and a little dinky vent in front of my mouth. I am going to have to check into the modulars more, and try some on.

what do you mean by confined feeling in the modular style??

The Polaris modulars have the exhaust exiting out the side, basically just like what a fighter pilot wears.
The older Polaris modulars just had a tube coming down from that mask and from what I understand the water vapor from your breath would pretty much freeze on your jacket. Not good.
I also had considered the Snoforce modular, but the visor didnt have the flip-down sunshield, so I passed on it.
I personally think that a heated shield is something thats really nice to have. For me, its not so much because it makes it so that the faceshield wont fog, for me its nice to have incase you are forced to ride in freezing rain or freezing fog.
It seems like at least once a year I find myself having to ride in some kind of freezing precipitation. Usually its when Im at least 20 miles away from home and it always seems to happen at night. 2 years ago I had to ride over an hour in what was literally a downpour. It sucks to have to stop every 5 minutes to de-ice your faceshield or goggles and a heated visor solves that problem. Now all I do is carry a rag in my pocket so that I can wipe the water off of my visor and Im good to go. I do find the cord that attaches to your sled and to the faceshield to be kind of irritating, but you get used to it after a while.

Helmet and glasses

Octane is right, the heated shield is mostly for freezing mist or rain but there was times when I rode without that I would get a small area of frost on my shield. The heated shield has nothing to do with glasses. I have been considering a modular to make it easier to get the glasses on but the models I've looked at don't have a chin curtain like the full face and reley on the mask, which I don't care for.

Geezer

Even without glasses my helmet fogs up almost right away, every time, even with glasses on the glasses don't fog, the helmet shield does, again right away. I thought maybe an electric shield would help solve that problem. So I think the design of my helmet is not that great in general. I also always have frozen condensation on my coat under the helmet. All of this is no matter what the temp is.

I would trie contacts again. I use ProView monthly contacts and its the only way for me. I have the Skidoo helment and open face new this year. I rode once with glasses and it was no fun.

Octane is correct when saying the freezing rain or fog will keep the sheild clear. I have had that happen and the only way to clear it is with the back of my glove and that sucks. I never fog the lense from my breath though and my glasses stay clear. Other guys I ride with swear by the full face helmet with goggles but I see them cussing at them often also. Good luck with your decision.
