Worked on my 71' GP this weekend. I got it running pretty good. Now I am wondering what it will take to get it to turn on the ice. It's dead stock suspension right now. What for picks and how many? What length carbides? You know what I need!!!!
 

Take the front bogie wheel assembly and move it up into the tunnel,this will put more weight on the skis.
 
Try anything to get the track up, even flipping the front set of bogies upside down. Do you plan on racing your GP or riding it?
 
I just what to go left. Its a 71 GP396 chassis & I have a GP433F motor in it .040 wisecos, dual 38 mikunis, ported & piped . So until the ice is ready just doing this and that for now....
 
Sounds fun. We have a 1970 SS396 with a GP433F motor in it. Pipes and a single carb. Spun the center out of a few tracks and they are getting harder to find. Remember seeing 70+ on the dream meeter back in the day across Lake Cadillac. At that speed all hell was shaking and jumping so just looking at the speedo was a thrill. We did put a slide rail from a 75 GP in it though.
 
Yeah! The track was the first weak link.... It's sitting about 12 feet past the garage door. My kids are laughing at me from the big bang it made! I think it only hit 60 on the speedo. I put the 74 track under it now. little more lug on the 74 track too.

So glad to find this thread, back in high school I rode a then one year old 71 SS 433 with my best friend on a 72 GP 433. We were the terror of our small town and completely obliterated the competition. There was not another 440 fan that even came close! I had a new 74 GP 440 that the SS simply ran away from, they're quick.

I am in the process right now of building a tribute to my old girl with a 72 GP. I've got an exciter engine for it so that I get higher compression, reeds and CDI ignition. I plan on using a pair of racked flat slides on it and Aaen will sell me a pipe in pieces so that I can make it fit. I want to use a Phazer suspension under it to eliminate the bogie and track problems (I ate many of those single sprocket tracks). I have also been told that with a little TLC you can fit a pair of Phazer jugs on to the Exciter case and with the pipe and carbs be up around 80 hp!!!!

I can't wait to take this to the drags and watch the look on some unsuspecting victim as his new 600 is run down by this old GP, too funny!

What are you doing for clutching? Any upgrades planned there? I've had some thoughts so far, but haven't really delved too deep into yet and am definetly open to suggestions. Best. G.
 
not much can do with old stock clutch. I got the splined pto have to use stock clutch. put tighter spring in to bring engagement up!!! they run them in the old days didn't they, like Mike Trapp
 
I know what you're saying and I've been giving it some thought. I am going to write Olav Aaen and ask him for suggestions. I'm pretty sure he would have some ideas. Machining a new top shaft for the chaincase wouldn't be too difficult, the problem as I see it is that any secondary clutch other than the old ones that run on the right side of the chaincase wouldn't work. Any modern secondary would be spinning in the opposite direction it was designed for and it's torque sensing abilities wouldn't work anymore, at least in my mind. You'd have to machine a helix completely opposite. Not an immpossibility either, just the cost involved. But then, like you say They seemed to work then.

I had a 71 SL 338, my 71 SS 433, a 72 433 B, 74 GP 433 and 75 GPX 338 and I never had a hitch of trouble with any of the secondaries. The primary spring seemed to get weak quickly, but the secondaries in all of mine worked like a charm. Of course I never tried to push the power through them that I am planning on now. Maybe somebody else has dealt with this before? G.
