what should I look for?
its an 02 viper with 4K, fresh rings, new track, and studs. I have read alot about the Viper and am very excited about this sled. because at my budget it looks like alot of sled for the money.
Im looking for tell tale signs that the sled is a mess.
I know to look at the heat exchanger, what else do I need to look over?

Welcome Clearwaterms!
The Viper is for sure a lot of sled for the dollar. Vipers do not have too many issues. They for the most part are very reliable and run very well. There have been some cases of wiring rubbed through on the harness that runs under the recoil and cracks in the skid "w" front arm. Vipers can also run hot in low snow condition unless you add a rear cooler. Yamaha offered a soft shock up date for a minimal cost when the sleds were new. There was also a bulletin on triming the belly pan for a better hood fit. Try the search function on the forum SRX/Viper page and I am sure you will find a few posts discussing this same question. Good luck with your purchase. G.B.

Here you go. This is in the Tech Section. I think this was performed by the dealer if you complained on how your hood closed.

Is this just on 2002 Vipers or newer models. I just bought a mint 2004 MNT Viper with a 156" Track, Simmons Pipes, Peak Heads, Reeds, SLP Flow Rites, Forced Air Induction, Lowell Porting, plus some other mods.
The only thing I am doing now is ceramic coating the pipes, installing a new Ohlin far-rear susupension shock, possible new idler wheels in 8' or 9" in anodized blue (strip some of the stock ones off) and either get a new Peak Head in blue or titanium b/c I do not like the red ones, but could live with it I guess.
I am thinking of going back to 9 tooth extoverts from 8 if I can.

The 03 Vipers and newer hoods were updated by Yamaha.
The Viper is a all around great trail sled that gets great gas milage is alot of fun.

I'm still pleased with my 2004 Viper S. Everytime I look at a 4 stroke, and find out what the trade in value is, I like it even more. 2datrl

You got that right. Two Vipers in the garage now, and I still don't have as much in them as a new 4 stroke. Nothing against them, but dang $$$$$$!
