I am going to replace clutch springs for first time on a 98 vmax 500 , It has stock springs right now , anybody have any ideas on what would work to make the old girl a little peppier ? might drop a tooth or two on the top gear as well .

do not drop teeth in chain case. if you want that old girl to be peppy as heck use the vmax 500 clutch set-up in the tec pages. i had a modified version (aftermarket primary weights) in my 2001 sx500r and trust me it wakes it up plenty.
the set-up is
primary- uses 8ab-00 weights (your stock ones) with 2.4g 1st hole
2.4g 2nd hole (rivits)
- stock spring with 3 engagement shims (yours is same)
- stock rollers (same as yours 15mm)
secondary- 47/41 dalton helix (your dealer can get you this)
- red secondary spring wrapped to 6-1 (70/80) (your stock spring)
made mine snappy as heck and you should be able to do this for $300.00 or under depending if you need sliders pins and bushings in your clutch. i would tear it down 1st and see what is worn before you start ordering parts. i am betting you will need bushings and sliders at the least if it is the clutch's 1st time apart since new. good cleaning cannot hurt either.
