what are your top speeds for this sled. my buddy aka(srv freak) wants to kick my --- againsed my blizzard w 503 fan.
My brothers ´84 / 85 SRV tops out at 140-145 kmh to gps. Don´t know about the ´81 though. Does it have the lower skid? If so, and if the engine is strong it might go even faster.

Unless that SRV is a real mess he will have you for breakfast, lunch and dinner. An SS440 should walk all over a 503. I don't think you have much chance on this one.

I had two of those an 83 and an 86. The 83 I swapped the skid to an Xtra12 and that had a DG pipe with a comet and it rocked. That was an awesomw sled that was a blast to ride. Wish I would have kept it. If they are properly tuned and in good working order plus the rider doesn't weigh 250lbs I think he'll hand you your a$$.

Stock SRV puts out just little under 70hp so you wont get even close.
Like Ike said mine runs 140-145k mh (90mph) And it runs stock gearing to maximun, if its geared up its even faster. Track condition makes a lot, icy surface and SRV beats liquid cooled sleds.

last winter we had it out in the 1/8 mile. the blizzard beat him but he wasent shifting into high gear. this year we are going to put a comet 102 on it and see how that works. those stock clutches work well but when they wear out there is nothing you can do to fix them.

81-82 SRV's are about 56hp, in 83 Yamaha changed the porting which brought them up to 62hp. You should kick his butt!. Add more porting, pipe, reeds, and a 38-40mil carb and these things are awsome.

Has Anyone Ever Played With A Comet 108-c Clutch On One Of These. What Would You Recomend For Cam Arms And Spring.

Stock equivalent, Red primary spring Comet #-207877, arms (weights) A-1 (48.5grams) The only problem with a 108c is there isn't a whole lot of clearance between the belly pan and the belt guard.
i see what you mean. the comet is quite a bit wider than the yamaha clutch.
that could be a serious pain, may have to bring out the BFH. lol

okay srv freak has another question. he has two 81 stock pipes and a stock 83 pipe. is there a difference in performance between the two.?
he also has a line on an aaen pipe for an 81 srx. will this pipe fit and will it net any gains.?
im wondering if any usefull tuning can be achieved by altering the length of the stinger tube inside the stock pipe.?

I don't believe there is any difference between the 81 stock pipe and the 83. The 81 srx pipes from Aaen are twins not a single. You could probably pick up a cheap single pipe in the classifieds (Aaen, Bender, PSI ). I don't know if altering the length would help.

On the clutch, either rebuild the original (if possible), get a good original or if you want a Comet get a 102. The 108 is a larger diameter (overdrive) clutch and the original SRV secondary is not a match for it. You will run into problems at full shift with the 108 unless you modify the secondary or get the larger diameter overdrive secondary to match it. If you get the overdrive secondary you will then need a longer belt.
SRV pipes should all be the same but if there was a difference the 83 would be better than the 81. I have never heard of any HP gains on a modded stock pipe but it is possible that it may help. Although it will be hit or miss game unless you can find some proven specs on any mods. If you want a performance pipe get one that is allready made. 81 SRX pipes will not work on an SRV stock or otherwise. The 81 SRX engine was designed to engage at 5,200rpms and shift at 9,250rpms. The SRV will never run on pipes like that.

The 80-1/2' and 81' SR-V 's had the same motor - @ 56ish HP. in 1982 they changed the cylinders to a " 8R6" cyl. with revised porting and @ 62-ish HP. The 82'- 91' motors were mostly indentical except for hood vents...small other details. Other than suspension in 83' - the 1983 - 1991 were for the most part the same sled.....what a run ! Still think the SRV's were one of yamaha's best looking sleds.
-Matt oh yea - in 83'-84' they came stock with a comet 102c clutch(from yamaha) and in 85'-91' they had the "YPZ" yamaha clutch. If this info helps-??? - still wish I had my old 83'.....

srv freak has a set of 8r600 jugs and a set of 8h800 jugs. im assuming the 8r6 superceded the 8h8 and make more power.? is there any difference in cyl heads?

This is second hand info but I know it to be true. I had some friends in the "80s" That besides serious porting they would cut one inch out of the pipe close to the Y-Pipe and gut the silencer. I would imagine that this would raise the shift RPM some. This way they could tell people they were stock They by far had the fastest SRVs around including other SRVs with aftermarket pipes. I'm not sure how much was the porting & how much was the pipe mods but I know they ran on pump gas and trail road them on very long trips.
