I came across YamerDown's post today post on replacing the water pump seal and now I dont know what I should do. My Viper had 7,000 miles on it when I blew the crank bearing last season. I just finished rebuilding my Viper motor with a new crank bearing and new OEM pistons and rings. I just placed the motor in the sled on Sunday. I think I remember seeing a little oil stain at the weep hole but I do not remember seeing any green crusties when I pulled the motor last March. I dont know if I should pull the motor back out and replace the water pump seal and oil seal or run it and keep an eye on it?

What are the concerns with running and keeping an eye on it? I have to say I am FREAKED out with trying to change it myself after reading all the posts on this. if I decide to change the seals right now, I can take just motor to the dealer and maybe save a little labor cost?

Not sure what I should do. I greatly appreciate any feedback or comments. Thanks, G.B.

The saying if it aint broke don't fix couldn't apply here any better. Keep a eye on it if it does leak you get about 100 miles on a cup or so. My dealer ended up fixing it in the sled for like $140 total it leaked after they did it and warranted the first repair and did everything in there the 2nd time (oil seals, etc) and it fixed it, but they are a REALLY good dealer.

IF you a hour from pulling it out maybe be worth it but there is no gurantees that they will fix it right either and you may need to take it back like I did (I think the seal needs heat to activate it) and have it installed in the chassis anyway.

Those waterpumps are the devil! Fortunatly once they are fixed they last a long time

I also read somewhere that when you replace them they will leak for the first few rides and then seal up by them selves. I'm thinging about replacing mine cause I'm worried about coolant going the other way and getting into the motor. Thought I'd read at least one example of that on here. Also had a buddy with a MXZ that began doing coolant injection rather then oil injetions, caused by a similar problem.

Thanks Kinger and YamerDown. I bought my sled with 4,000 miles on it and remember topping off the coolant a little. I have since put on 3,000 miles without adding any coolant. I guess my next question is if a little oil trace out the weep hole after 7,000 miles is normal or is it anything to be concerned with? Like I mentioned above, I remember seeing a little oil trace out the weep hole during tear down but no coolant.

Thanks , G.B.

Don't worry about it unless it starts leaking. I have done a few of them and they aren't the worst in the world, but you dont want to do it if you don't have to. If it starts leaking, then get it fixed.

Yamaholic22, great. I was just looking to see what else I should look out for during my engine rebuild.

Thanks, G.B.
