Another question for you SRX guys... Mine went into the dealer the other day for a new 1.25" ripsaw. I'm going to try it without studs, since I don't do a lot of ice riding anyway. The mechanic working on it said he would take off the heat exchanger, since all it does is protect it from throwing a stud into the motor.

Does this sound like a good idea, and later if I add studs, clip the track and throw the heat exchanger back on it?

you can't really remove the front exchanger. I bet he meant the exchanger protectors. Maxdlx

Yeah, sorry. Just the cover to protect it. He said that way my track won't rub and it shouldn't do any harm. Just want to make sure before I give him the OK.

you can leave them in and just let the track wear in. Only takes 200 miles or so. Maxdlx

You can leave them in and let the track wear in as max said, you can clip the track in line with the protectors, or you can pull them out. Anyway is fine, but i had a track rip out one of my front protectors once due to rubbing.

sorry to hijack guys but yamaholic you said you ripped your protector out?? I just put on a 1 inch track and was told that it will rub, and i think you even posted in the thread i had about clipping it.... When you say clip it you mean the lugs that will hit the exchangers correct?? And if thats the case how much do you think i should nip off. I'd rather nip some rubber off myself then have the track nip the protector off and god knows what else lol. thanks

about 1/4 inch on a 1 inch track. If you guys are buying new tracks, camo makes tracks pre clipped for ac and pol. Maxdlx

okay perfect thanks, and thats right on the windows that i clip is it not, i notice there is a lug on there.... thats the only one that i could see rubbing the protectors???

You shouldn't need to clip a 1" on an 02SRX, I put a 1.25 Ripsaw on mine, and clipped about 3/16" at the protector locations, and that gave me 1/16" clear. The way the protectors mount, I suppose there could be some variance in their factory locations from sled to sled. Once the track is on, you can look up from below the front exchanger and see exactly where to clip. A end crimp tool for putting oeticker clamps on oxy-acet hose is the perfect tool BTW.

I have a 1" camoplast track (aggressor) on my '01 SRX and it rubbed on the front protectors. Only required about 1/8" of nipping. I too used Oetiker clamp pliers to cut the lugs. I suppose ceramic tile nippers would work too.

Well I guess that proves the way the protectors are riveted on are not veryconsistent sled to sled. I could have gotten away with cutting an 1/8" on my 1.25". So each sled needs to be checked I guess. :letitsnow

Yes you should clip them right above the windows, that is where they contact the exchanger protectors. An end nip pliers works well for this. The other note is that if your protectors were factory installed or you installed them with yamaha rivets you can almost always just let the track wear in, but if you use regular rivets the rivets will break and you will lose your protector.

Yeah I had a stud rip through on my 97 600 XT and it went around and around until it punched a hole in the front exchanger. Could have smoked the motor but I noticed the green snow in time. No more studs for me. I would leave them in and let it wear.

Thanks for that. They are out and I am going to go without studs.
Other question - will that 1.25 ripsaw hook up enough to get good traction on the trails? I know it will be useless on the ice, but I'm not on the ice that often.

I went with a Hacksaw & it rubbed. As I was checking the protectors to see how bad, I noticed one had been removed & re-riveted. The bottom plate the rivets go thru was bent. I could move it too easily by hand. I drilled it out & just left the one in. Do you think that's fine??? Looks like something happend to the previous owner...some bent fins ont the exchanger on that side. I looked it over good & the core looks fine.
