I put 5" Rox risers on my 99 SRX - called Mountain Performance to add a steering post stifffener to safegaurd against breaking off the steering column. They have discontinued this part. Are the newer SRX columns built stronger than the 99 models? I am wondering if I should upgrade my steering post. Any suggestions? I am posting this in the mountain sled section also.

Steering Post

I had the Post break off just under the top mount on my 98 srx. That was without a riser. I found that in order to replace it you had to remove the engine or have really small hands. I replaced mine with one from a viper that looks much stronger. But you could also probably make your own stiffner by pounding a piece of tube down through the top.

Yamaha had an issue on the SRX steering post break on the 98 and I think 99.

You may be able to have it welded or just buy an updated one

I am about 90% sure that 2000 and up saw a stronger steering post, I also think that the viper and SRX steering posts are stronger too. I had my 99 600sx break the steering post also right at the weld at the top of the post, having it welded would be of no use, the weld broke at the toes of the weld, ripping the base metal instead of breaking the weld so the problem is not in the weld. I would personally get an updated steering post having realized what would have happened if I had been going down the trail at 60 + mph instead of playing with the sled in the parking lot like I was... pretty embarrassing having the bars snap off of a sled that isn't even running and sending you to the ground! lol

2000 up sxr, viper, srx posts were built better. if your a stand up kinda guy or using any kinda risor, you should either reinforce yours or install a stiff one.

i have a few left.. also if you have an sx this works very good to get around the carbs and makes everything fit better.

pm me if you want an updated one.
