Does anyone know if the Viper's were known to eat up the center cylinder? My buddies blew up last year and wiped out the lower rod bearing on the center cylinder. The bearing chunks sucked up and wiped out the cylinder, piston, and pitted up the head dome. I have heard of 2 or 3 others that the center cylinder blew up on as well. I'm starting to get worried now, because my Viper has been good so far, but just yesterday I installed a Hauck Venom Kit and now I'm worried that my rod bearing will go out as well, now that the engine is more "high strung". So, was there something wrong with the Viper's or was something miss adjusted on these people Viper's? Is there some adjustments for me to make to put me on the safer side of the spectrum? Maybe that different oil injection deal (oil injects into rubber intake boots).

the thing you never hear from the guys who blow the crank is, is that they never fogged the motor in the spring. If he lost the crank bearing first, I'd bet that was the case. You hear of alot more of them running for 1000's of miles than you hear of them loosing a crank bearing. Maxdlx

I bought mine new, had SLP triples on it since day one (which push peak rpm's 3-400 over stock). No problems so far. I would agree with max, probably poor storage. It's amazing how many people I run into that "keep there sleds good" by starting them several times over the summer. I can't believe there are people that still think this is ok. No stabil, don't clean them, don't store them inside, or put a plastic tarp on them so all the condensation collects on the inside of it, no fogging, etc. If you take care of it correctly, although nothing is 100%, you should have many years of trouble free riding. My family has rode nothing but Yammi's since the Exciter 440 was the top dog, I've never seen any model that had a serious failure. Just take care of them properly.

Lost my center bearing @ 9400 miles much the same as you described.
It was a good run, motor was not touched...probably should have reringed it at some point before 9400 miles.
Rebuilt w/ used parts found here
great site!

I blew the crank bearing between the #1 and #2 cylinder at 7,000 miles last year. The motor had never been apart for anything and always ran great. After taking it apart, I am convinced that the bearing went because the original owner and I did not fog the motor. The #2 cylinder rod was orange in color from rust. I will fog from now on for sure. G.B.

Rering at 9500 with ports cleaned up, still crankin' at almost 12,000 on the odometer. Reliability is excellent. Broke it in with Yamalube, 1 tank of oil, Amsoil Interceptor ever since. Seafoam 1 tank each trip and when stored. Never fogged, and stored with a full tank of fuel.

There is no reliability problems with them, a viper, a srx, a sx, a sxr all can lose crank bearing s if they are subjected to moisture, a number one enemy, all you can do is properly fog them and try to keep excess moisture out of the engine during storage, the use of a good synthetic oil also improves engine life.
