We have some jugs to I.D. I thought they were 1980 SRX gold model.
1 set is 8G900 no bridge intake side
1 set 8G900 with a bridged intake
Thanks

8G9 CYL WAS USED ON 78-79-80 SRX. NO INTAKE BRIDGES EVER ON ANY OF THESE YEARS. DON,T KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE THERE UNLESS THEY HAVE BEEN SLEEVED. !! 3:16 (yammie tony)
i would say sleeved as well! cut the bridge off before you use them cylinders cause if you dont ,expect to tear it down soon after! it will heat up and break off and cause destruction. believe me when i tell you!!it happened to me before

Thanks gentleman – yes in fact it has been sleeved I see, fine with me. I’ll fix that obstruction. I suspect the stock bores were plated using steel rings.
The pistons I have are 7B – 7. Can I get a set of chrome rings for those pistons to run in a steel bore or do I have to buy a set of aftermarket to get the chrome?
I also have one 18A – 14 and one 1B – 1 piston.
What were the major things they did to lower the HP of the 80?
Thanks

80 SRX WAS HEAVIER THAN THE 78-79. NOT BY MUCH BUT THEY WERE ALITTLE BECAUSE 80 SRX HAD DEFFERENT SKID FRAME. ANOTHER BIG FACTOR I SAY THE OIL INJECTION, BUTTERFLY CARBS, AND DEFFERNT CDI WERE PART OF THE REASONS FOR LESS HP ON THE 1980 SRX. STILL A GREAT SLED. 3:16 (yammie tony)

The only difference for less HP then a '76 was carb size. They were only slower than a '78 or '79 because of weight and driveline efficiency. The '80 may have been slightly less compression but I can't remember for sure. You can run any ring in the sleeved cylinder. I use Kimpex and they work great for drag racing. I don't recognize the part #'s you are using.

if your going to use an iron bore sleav'd cylinder, use a chrome faced ring for sure. you should be able to get a chrome faced ring from yamaha.

Any word on those part #'s?

What is the BEST thing to do with these jugs? I have a complete 78 engine less internals and a 79 that is presently seized. I'd like to turn the 79 into a real terror with all the goodies, just don't know yet what all of the goodies are? On here trying to figure that out. G.

The best thing to do is NOT sleeve them with a steel liner, they dont wick or transfer the heat away from the piston as fast and they will need richer jetting to keep the piston cool. You can have them either rechromed or go with nicasil plating like the new sleds run. The chrome plating was not a very durable coating, hard to seat rings good to it, liked to flake off and ruined crankbearings. The nicasil of today works excellant and can be run with the rings, youll need to send in a new piston with your cylinders and have them sized, they will run very well and not have the pronblems of sleeves. These srx440 have a very narrow fuel curve and when you get too rich trying to cool the piston with fuel from a steel sleeve they will really be down on power.
To get alot of power from these sleds youll need to port the cylinders, do massive head cutting/rechamber which takes some time due to the offset chamber, and shorten up the intake flange, with aaen wild pipes, 40-44mm carbs(had the best luck with 40mm flatslides) and moving the timing pick up they scream!

Hey thanks, I thought of the nicasil lining, but was unsure if it could be done to these old girls. I used to race a GPX and then just trailed an SS 440 until 83 when I bought a new V-Max 540, so I sorta skipped this whole era other than being hugely aware of the success the 77's had.
I have spoken a little with Olav and was thinking of sending the engine in to him for the whole gamut as you have mentioned including his pipes and a set of his taper bore flat slides. Your take on those carbs?
I love to tinker, and have a buddy here with a 77 and have been looking at it closely, so was even planning on building an aluminum bulkhead for mine as well. I'm slowly learning what needs to be done from CDI boxes to titanium jackshafts, though I still haven't decided whether to set it up for drag racing or ice ovals? My heart is leaning towards the ovals, but there is no circuit that runs near here from what I have found out so far. One of the other fellows here has told me that the SRX's automaticly get bumped to mod classes for oval, so I guess if you're already there, you might as well be really STRONG! Thanks again. G.

If you are going to drag race it, there is no gain in plating vs lined cylinders. Heat soak is heat soak. If you are going to oval it, some organizations won't allow aftermarket ignitions or anything but round slide carbs. Aaen is a good place or DRP.

DRP? Sorry?
