Actually many more than can be put in a single post. The electrical tach in my 98 SRX isn't functioning, I swapped it out from the one in my 01 SXR and that tach wasn't the problem. I have the engine out and am tracing down the wiring looking for a short or broken wire. I have a service manual, but the electrical section doesn't even seem to deal with this, will do some more studying. The nonelectric start models have a condensor in them, the roll I'm assuming is to temporarily store any surplus current, is that correct? Does anyone know where there would be a complete explanation of the electrical systems in these sleds? Thanks for any help you can provide.

thats the first place i would check is under the motor....had the same problem in my 98 srx harness was rubbed 3 or so wires rubbed and shorted....if you search i explained how to check this in another post

That's a smoothing condsor.. Think of it like a like battery. When the voltage drops it kicks some in. Without this the tach will be wacky. Its like the tach on electric start model without a battery.

You can test it its just a capacitor. Search the web to look for the test or do my test at your own risk. Take the condensor out hook it up to a 9v or 12 battery for a 10-30seconds and then hook a test lamp to it. The bulb should glow for a short time.

Try the test again

The 98 SRX tach is not compatible with one from a 01 SXR. You need a tach from a 98 or 99 sled. Electrical system is completely different. If you want more details on this ask BETHEVIPER or MRVIPER700.
