2001 SRX 700. Just cleaned the carbs and it sounds a lot better than it did before. But ... I have one of those IR thermometers, and knowing that EGT is the key to tuning, I checked the temps. I checked each cylinder pipe 1" from the jug. The temps were not consistent, matter of fact they were like 40-70 degrees diff sometimes. Shouldn't they all be the same? Am I doing this wrong?
Thanks all.
Thanks all.

agai, don't worry about temps until after you have it jetted poperly from plug and piston checks. I have had my egt before be 100 degres off and then be 30 the other way. Be chaper to not worry abou temps ntil after you get it jetted. Maxdlx

If your using an IR thermometer, your wasting your time. Surface temps don't give you real indication of true exhaust stream temp out of your exhaust port. The different shapes & paint thickness, etc of the different header pipes skew that.
If you are intended on monitoring and tuning using EGT's, buy probes and a display. Your better off tuning with piston wash and plug readings otherwise...

Piston check? How do you check the pistons without removing the heads?

you get a little light and look down the spark plug hole witht he piston at bdc. Maxdlx

Just as stated above, tuning to an EGT is a recipe for burnt pistons - tune to plugs and piston wash and then hook up the EGT to see where the temps are!!
