Shopping a canon XTi Rebel camera on ebay. Comes in kit form with 2 ($650)or 3 ($800) lenses. The three lense version includes a wide angle lense. I don't know jack about cameras, so would appreciate some advice on the third lense. Is a wide angle lense something that would ever be used or would the lenses in the 2 lense kit do the job? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I'm pretty sure wide angle lenses are good for taking close up pictures and scenery pics but I dont remember... Its been close to 4 years since I was in Photography classes, lol.

This would be my first choice of lens. This one or something similar. This lens is designed more toward the photographer that wants to take photos indoors in low light without flash. The F stop tells you how much light a lens can take in. The lower numbers are better. But the lower numbers come at a cost. http://www.adorama.com/CA3514AF.html That lens would take very bright very clear pictures.

Then I would want a lens like this http://www.adorama.com/CA70300ISNU.html for taking distance shots. Keep in mind that the lens is more responsible for the quality of the image than the camera body. The lens actually brings the picture to the camera. The camera just records it.

The XTi is a great low cost digital SLR. The kits that they put together really compromise on lens's. The canon package http://www.adorama.com/ICADRXTIBK.html is a good example of the compromise on lens. That isn't a great lens, but would be a good starter lens. For the beginning photographer probably all the lens you will ever need. What you will notice is it has a much higher f stop than the first lens I linked to.

Just remember the higher the numbers (18-55mm) the greater the zoom. A decent zoom for handheld camera is about 200mm. The 18-55 would be more of a normal range lens. Lens's that have a range ie 18-55 or 70-200 are also a compromise. They won't take as good as a picture as a single distance lens. Again, probably not important to the beginner. F stop is how much light the camera can take in. If the f stop gets too high the camera will always need a flash indoors and outdoors it will need very bright light or long exposure times leading to blurry pictures.

Hope that helps.

Thought I should add, wouldn't be my first choice for a trail camera. I think it is too much to carry. There are a couple guys on here that carry them though and seem to be very happy with them.

Thought I should also add... Be careful of the cameras on Ebay. Make sure it is a USA camera and not a grey market camera. That sounds really cheap for an XTi with three lens's.

I also think that three is probably more than a beginning user would use. If you have a decent wide angle lens and a decent telephoto lens your covered for most of your shots. My choice of len's is also based on my typical shooting. The reason I would want the low F stop 35mm is because I shoot a lot of pictures indoors that I would rather not use a flash with.

sorry for the rambling post...

Based on a collection of advice, including yours, I have made a decision and intend to purchase a canon kit soon. I will insist on Canon USA products, canon lens's and will also buy the wide angle lens. All I have to do now is get it past the finance committee. Thank you for the taking the time to help me.
