chain case bearing question???

Is the lower chaincase bearing just a plain 6205 bearing cause thats whats in mine. I thought my old sx had a 6205 with a seal on one side.

the one thats in my sled now is a greased idler wheel bearing.
 

i dont recall i put after market in & left them both sealed.but i just dont remember..sorry..check when you take them out.
 
i know the top one is open to the back of the chaincase, i guess its so it will trap the oil.

so i guessing i can use any 6205 bearing and remove one seal.

Think it's the other way. Purpose of removing the seal is to let the oil in the chain case lube it. Open side out towards the chain.

Just leave both on though.

After having changed the chaincase bearings twice in my Viper I suggest leaving both seals on aftermarket bearings. They come lubed and if the seal fails (chaincase) its not a big deal since its being bathed in oil anyways. My 2 cents. :winterrul
 
I have mine out right now as well, and the seal is to the inside of the chaincase according to the shop manual. (I believe it's sealed on the inside due to metal filings from the chain) ;)!
 
Fireman is right on about the metal filings. It's right in the service manual. "Make sure that the bearing seals face towards the drive chain as shown" The seal will still let oil seep through to the bearing to keep it lubricated, and will filter the metal filings out of the oil before it reaches the bearing. Personally if the bearing came with both sides sealed, I would keep them both on there. Then you get the benefits of the seal acting as a filter to keep the filings out, and you are helping to better protect the bearing from the elements that could possibly get into the bearing during operation through the other side. I can't see a downside to running with both sides sealed.
 
Why not order the correct bearing ???????
Don't go opening bearing seals and what I have found over the years NTN SUCKS.
Go Yamaha bearings from the dealer
 
^^^ The OEM bearings from yamaha only come sealed on one side... this is why the service manual clearly states to leave the seal facing the chain and the open side towards the track... unless i'm mistaken, the OEM bearings are NTN anyway, just with a price jack from what I understand (unless my dealer is giving me NTN bearings for Yamaha price... I just know the seals all say NTN on them) Am I wrong on any of this?

well my local dealer closed and I dont have the time to order one too many things to do. I just put a brand new ntn bearing in and poped one of the seels off. Il swap a yamaha bearing in there in the spring.

what local dealer are you talking about if your in Ottawa? Whats wrong with Wheel Sport.
I don't think its an NTN bearing, when I replaced mine ( as far as I can remember ) no NTN on it.
 
the seal is run on the chain side to keep metal fragments out of bearing from chain and gears, the oil is drawn in by the seal some when spinning and this is what keeps the bearing lubed, it also does not run a inner seal because the dirt/snow is kept out of the bearing by the seal in the chaincase, that rides on the driveshaft. The reason the seal is left off the chaincase bearing is so it will weep a small pool of oil to keep the driveshaft seal lubed, other wise the seal would just simply dry out and pack the well full of water /dirt and if water gets ina nd freezes it will move the seal out or crack the chaincase.

motorsports world closed, wheelsport is to far for me, moto gatineau are idoits so Im just ordering parts from now on.
