A friend of mine has a 98 mountain SRX with a comet clutch. His chaincase broke like no one seen before, the chain split in two ways. The housing and lid exploded open at the top of the chaincase as well as the bottom. Also cracked the entire half of the housing, an open crack. Also, the shaft twisted a bit where the top gear is. Anyone have any idea what could have cause this?, I'm geussing his comet is not set-up right. There was chaincase lubricant and the chain was not super tight. I dont see how else it can do so much damage.

How fast was it turning when it blew?
A friend of mine did that on a summit 800, minus the twisted shaft. Took us two hours just to unwad the chain so we could tow it.
He geared his down, and now has to change his chain every season or it breaks.

He said he was going about 140km. He was pinning it on and off.

I highly doubt it was the primary clutch. Think about it.....when you are going that fast and the chain comes apart it's really not that hard to believe. The chain is only 1/4 inch away from the housing on the top and bottom. When it snaps and the jack shaft is still spinning with the weight of the sled and the rider pushing it you've got major carnage unless you are extremely lucky. Look at it on the bright side. If it locked up the track and he skidded sideways, you've got barrel roll time. Or if it didn't lock up and he has no brakes at that speed you've got tree time! or he could just slam into another sled or car or whatever!!

Yeah ive had mine do that 2 times now minus the shaft twisting part. Damn rough trails caused mine to snap. Just holding it to the bar and bouncin off the moguls will tear some stuff up

theres used chaincases all over the place, some on here from people parting the sleds out or on evil bay. This is why its a good idea to remove and inspect the chain every year and change the oil in chaincase, they do fail. Fail more often then not from none ever looking at them, adjusting the chain slack, basic pre season maintenance.
Yes, I have mine apart right now cuz of my F Heat exchanger. A perfect time to re-do all the major areas. Have all the stuff i need except my FHE and valves. thx guys

BTW_ the first sign of a wearing chain is the sprockets teeth will be grooved out and rippled and look for broken links in the chain when you inspect it, once one plate is cracked or broken, its a chain reaction!!(pardon the punt...lol)
I just checked my links in the chain, and looked at both the sprockets and there fine. Thx mrviper.

That 98 had the old link belt chain in it, even though it's 15 wide its not as strong as the newer HYVO style chain. It's a 98 and I'm sure it hasn't been babied, it probably just gave up, they make a big mess at WOT.
