I have a 1990 Exciter with 17/31 gears. I was wondering what the best would be? i.e. 17/29, 16/29, 18/31. I cant remember what combo gives lower end vs top end! any input would be appreciated.

If I remeber right the larger the drive gear and lower the driven gear the faster you will go, if your engine can turn it. The smaller the drive gear and the larger the driven gear the more low end.
Here is a gearing chart from my gpx manual. The closer to a 2to 1 ratio the better pick up but you have have less top end.

I can get you the gearing from a 1988 exciter if you want. I don't think they are that different.
thanks alot guys, I am just putting a new track on it and was considering messing around with it. I got a good deal on this sled ( havent even ridden it yet) but remember back in the day they were pretty quick! I like to tinker with the old ones.....maybe make a boondocker out of it????stretch it out...I dont know...
