When installing 6" riser

I broke a steering shaft on a 97MM with a 6" riser. I think replaced it with a new Yamaha shaft from a later year MM. Never gave me any trouble after that. I think MPI sells a heavy duty version.

Just did my 99 SRX a couple of weeks ago. I bought a newer MM steering post from a member but found out later it wont work because it is straight. I just drove a piece of 1/2" black gas pipe (about 8" long) into the column. Some people say to grind a recess in the pipe to miss the internal weld on the column, but I just drove it down - it fits real tight this way and you have to wack it pretty good. Someone on snowest said to also weld a couple of gussets between the flat top and the post. I might still do that. With 5" risers, it still flexes a little when you pull hard but I don't think it can break now. I have a steering post for a 2002 MM if you want to go that route. I guess they are stronger than the older ones.
