I have a 98 SRX 700 and need to remove the top end of one cylinder due to a broken bolt. I am having trouble pulling it apart. What do I need to do to pull the top end? thanks in advance. Kevin

Start by taking the pipes off, leave the manifolds on easier to get off (use for leverage later on) once the cylinders are out. Next remove the powervalves from the cylinders. Drain the coolant, and then pull the hoses off the water rail. Loosen the bolts holding the heads on (I left my water rail bolted to the heads) Once you get the bolts out just lift up on the water rail and the heads should come off easy. Now loosen the nuts that hold the cylinder to the case. The cylinders can be a PITA to get off because the alignment pins get corroded after time. I just used a rubber mallet to wiggle them free until they finally came off.

I think I'm screwed. I thought I had drained the coolant but that was not the case. I have coolant down in the case by the piston rods. Is there a easy way to get that out? whats is my next step? How do you properly drain the coolant? please help.

get a shop vac and get it shimmed down to a small enough size to get in the case. Get it sucked out asap. Maxdlx

I got the coolant out, no problems. will I have to replace seals/gaskets if I only remove one of the cylinder heads?

ready to reinstall jug and head. What do I need to lube up before reinstall? I've been told I need a special tool to squeeze the rings down to get them to fit back in. Is this true? Need some help, first time at this. thanks. Kevin

I am not exactly sure of this, thought I read it somewhere that the cylinders are tapered and the rings will compress on there own when the cylinder is slide down over the piston and ring.

yes that is the case the cylinders are tapered on the bottom....get an extra set of hands to compress the rings...make sure the open ends of the ring line up with the pin on the piston...writing on the rings goes up...tho i have done this by myself before...lube up the rings and piston with some 10w 30 or any motor oil....install the cylinder then you should be good torque to 24 ft lbs i think and install the head and torque to 20 ft lbs...i always use blue loctite on all the bolts....

No tool needed.
Just use your one hand to compress the rings and slide the cyl over it.
I lubed pretty much everything when I rebuilt my srx. Are you changing any parts other than the broken bolt?
I think you can re-use the rubber o-rings.
I would replace all gaskets, but that's just me.

the head o-rings are reualbe as long as they dont look damadged....according to mr viper you can put the orings in the freezer to shrink them if needed...the base is steel so you would be good to go....

Thanks for the info guys. I did not plan on changing any other parts for this season, but now that I have it apart. What should the top of the piston look like if its bad, mine is a dark brownish with black in some areas.
