I have a 98 vmax 700 triple and im just getting into the sport. I am pretty mechanical and just replaced the track. I put on a campolast energy track and i have it all back together and the track at the proper tightness. I ran it around the yard a bit and there is a horrible clunking sound coming from the drive shaft. Help me out please before snowfalls. If anyone has any suggestions i would appriecate it. Thanks

I replaced the bearing that attaches to the drive shaft itself. The track seems pretty smooth. Could it be that i have it too tight???

It could be how much slack with approx 20lbs of pressure you should about 1-2" between the track and hifax when doing that.

Did you get the tension right in the chaincase as well?

just "finger tight"

turn adjuster bolt in with your fingers until the point you feel resistance and tighten the lock nut

try changing the belt and see if it goes away. Did you swap out drivers at all. Maxdlx

Ya it was the chain case. I finger tighten it and no more noise. Now would that cause damage to the gear in there because it was loose?

You can always check and see by looking at the oil or pulling the cover gently and you should have to replace the gasket. It shouldn't have unless it slipped on the gears bad but never hurts to check.

Its really not uncommon to have the track rachetting on the grass is it? Mine always does it. When you get it on to the snow or ice it does not seem to rachet.

For the effort it takes, I would pull the chain case cover and inspect. If you don't want to do this, you can also keep a close watch on the oil dip stick magnet for any metal pieces that you might have chipped off. Drive train is pretty tough, don't know how hard you were test riding it? Gasket should be fine. I inspect my chain and gears before each season and i've never had to replace the gasket.
