Hi Guys, misplaced my keys for my 1998 vmax 700 xtc....was told if I copy down the numbers that are on the ignition I could get a key cut from it....well went to the dealer today with the number but all I can get is a blank key...was told to unplug ignition wire from the cdi box and take it in to a lock smith and they could proably cut one for me....is the cdi box easy to get to to unplug the ignition wire?? Do not want to start taking things apart if I do not have to...Can not seem to see the box or even where the wire harness goes to...Is there an easier way or diffrent way to get a key done???? Thanks guys....Diceman

What about just finding and used ignition with key, and swap 'em out?

Hey Man...yes I thought of that but was told that for about $10.00 I can get a key cut...either way I will have to take it out....so my man, where is that box...lol...???

find an ignition switch
post a picture of it in the WTB classisifieds section. The plug in has to be correct for your wiring harness.
I know this cuase 98 and 02 SRX are completely different wire harness
Your CDI is located on the left side where you sit right behind that black vent off to the left side of the gas tank.

Your CDI is located on the steering hoop behind the plastic where your left knee would be sitting on the sled.

on a '98 xtc....
your cdi(black box, thin) disc is on the right side(attached to the air box) as your sitting on the sled, there should be 3 pugs going ito it.

You were right Damon..it was on the right side..actually did not even have to unplug ignition harness from the cdi box...ignition has a wire harness that is about 8 inches long which then plugs into the main wire harness that goes to the cdi box... just pulled back vent plastic , followed the wire from the ignition until I saw the plug, unplugged it and know all is good...will try first to get a key cut first since I am told I can get it done for about $10.00....if that does not work then I will try to buy a uesd one..Thanks again boys..Diceman

Well took key ignition to a yamaha dealer but even with the ignition codes they could only order me a blank key so I went to a locksmith and 7 minutes later problem solved....Cost $15.00 for new keys....Thanks again guys
