Can you run an SRX tach in an SX?
The SRX pulls it's signal directly from the CDI.
The SX pulls it's signal from the lighting coil.
I think i've tried everything, but I can't get the tach to register. Is there a way to get it to work, or am I just going to have to buy an SX tach?

Won't work,I have been thru that already. When I bought my SRX,the tach wasn't working. The guy put in a tach from an SXR..didn't work. The SXR has a single headlight while my SRX has a double. That seems to be the issue as I was told. But I still ahad another problem also. The wire from the CDI was pinched or cut somewhere.I couldn't find where it was,as I traced the wires under the motor and all around...and gave up.If I remember correctly it was a yellow/black wire. I went to the CDI and noticed some black tape around the wire.Peeled it back and just found some plastic missing over a tiny section of wire.I guess the other guy was testing here with a meter as I was to.There was power out of the CDI,but not from that point to the connector ahead of the clutch.Basically I ran a new wire from the CDI right up to the conector off the tach and it now works.Never did find the bad spot even though I went thru it all with great preciseness.Put new wire loom over that wire and taped it all up good.

I have a spare SX Tach, will have to connect to my SXR to see if it still works. But if you have a dual bulb headlight in your SRX,don't think it will work. You will have to investigate your wiring.See if you are getting a signal from the CDI first. If so,just do a fast splice and run a loose wire to the y/b wire near the connector that goes to the Tach.I did and the tach ran, then I did a proper re-routing of a new wire from the CDI and protected it with wire loom.See what happens there first.

miss understood??
Maybe I am mis understanding which sled you are putting a Tach into.Is it an SX or SXR sled that you are trying to put an SRX Tach into?If so it still won't work, you'll need an SX tach then, single headlight model.

I am running a complete SX ignition system with my 1108 race sled, in my SRX chassis. I am running an SX stator, cdi, and everything else. I am not running lights. Basically you could say I have an SX700, and i'm trying to run an SRX tach, which is not working because they pull from different signals.
I need a 5" tach that pulls it's signal from the lighting coil. I just checked every possible yamaha shop manuals online, and i'm screwed. The only tach's that pull the signal from the lighting coil are the old style, not the 5" round. All of the new ones pull from the CDI. I guess i'm going aftermarket.

Ryan grab yourself a VDO, you will be happy you did when you start testing!!!
98 or 99 SRX tach
I thought a 98 or 99 SRX pulled from the lighting coil and in 2000 when they went to the hotter ignition and dual headlight bulbs that is when everything started to go through the CDI? Have you asked MRVIPER700 about this?

Madmatt, he mentioned that as well. I checked the wiring diagrams though, and they also pull from the cdi.

98-99 srx and 99 sx700 are the same thing, pull from blue wire both of them. Even same exact part numbers for the tach 8df-83540-42-00

as long as you not mixing old ignition tachs with new ignition tachs, it will work. also a twin tach that came in later 500 sleds wont show correct reading.
I thought so
Valin....I have a 98 SRX tach if you want it. Make me an offer.
