I put Apex bars on my 02 SRX. The handwarmers weren't working so I checked out the wiring tonight. Everything looks ok, but I am showing 4.35 volts regardless of where I move the hand warmer adjustment. Anyone know what the range of voltage should be coming out of the switch? It does shut off when moved all the way to the left, but no change at all when moving all the way to the right.
Also - Anyone happen to know what the output is on the 4 strokes to the warmers?

is this at idle or will the voltage go higher when you rev up the engine to around 6000-7000rpm while up on a jackstand?

Originally I checked it at idle. I just went out and re-ran it. Sure enough the voltage jumps as it should when rpm's are up. I then plugged in one warmer at a time. It would slowly warm up. (Not ho t at all)When I plugged them both in they barely got warm. It's like I need more juice for these grips. I have the adjuster all the way up. Any ideas?

apex warmers
connect voltmeter in parallel with grip warmers one in yellow/red other in black. 1500RPM should have 4-5 volts at 4000 should have 12-13 volts DC. don't know for sure if if apex and srx systems compatible , would guess not.

I have those voltages. Not a good sign for these apex grips. I may post on the 4 stroke side to see what they know about the apex grips.

I ohmed the old grips and they are 3.6. The apex grips are 7.1....again not a good sign to make these work.

Wire the warmers in parallel instead of in series. Then you will find your heat.

apex warwers
i know the apex runs the warmers through the ecm for the engine and digital display on speedo. thats all i got for ya.

Holic - Any downside to running them in parallel?

No, it will just draw more amps

I'm assuming I will be fine running it in parallel then. There are obviously some amps available without killing the electrical circuit since you can add a heated shield etc. without any problems. Since this will be the same as when I tested with just one wired in I should already have my answer if this will work. I'll have to take it for a ride to see if they get hot enough. Thanks for the help guys!!

series : R1 + R2= RT ... if each grip were 4 ohms, RT = 8 ohms
parrallel: 1/R1 + 1/R2= 1/RT ... if each grip were 4 ohms, RT = 2 ohms
if resistance goes down by factor of 4, load current goes up by factor of 4...
best to find the problem if there is one and not run them in parrallel... might be easier on mag coil, control, and CDI

what tj post is what I would look at or be concerned with, the power for the grips comes from the cdi on the 2001-02 srx, so if you burn out the power supply from cdi, its gonna get expensive to get warmers again(new cdi box) I have never done the swap so I cant give you information to it, but just keep in mind the power for the grips comes from the cdi, not the stator.

I didn't realize the power was coming out of the CDI. Now that does have me a little concerned. I got a post on the 4 stroke side saying they should ohm out between 2.3 and 3 ohms. If they are higher than that a lot of them had problems because of the initial install of going around the bend of the bar. (Damaged dunring installation) This problem was not seen on the 06 bars because of the bar hooks instead of hand warmers to the end. I am almost considering putting on 06 bars instead. On the 4 stroke side they have had a lot of issues with the 07's. Yamaha even has a "wiring harness" that changes them from running in series to running in parallel to get good heat.
I could be fighting a losing battle if the grips are ohming out too high to begin with. Thanks for the info MRViper.

i have the same problem as you with original handwarmer, voltage and current are in the spec but the handwarmer don't warm enough, I did try new handwarmer, not better, new cdi and stator, not better, checked wire harness and wire under the engine. not better
Now,the handwarmer work very well when i plug them in parallel instead of serie.. i think i will let them like this

So I had another thought.. Why couldn't I just wire the warmers through power coming out of the stator just as I would for a heated shield? I would still run it through the variable control so I could turn them up and down. What do you guys think?

T.T.T. Any thoughts on the re-wire?

I think you could just tap into another wire and put a resitor in line perhaps. That's how hot grips work. Or any other heated accessory.
