having done several of these, i think it is time well spent. more snow in and out of skid. you can do it with the track on the sled, easier than pulling and shipping and reinstalling. i use a homemade template and prefer 1 1/8" holes. i make my template from 1/4" plywood ripped to fit between track lugs. as tracks are different, so are templates. evenly space holes between drive windows and start smoking the holesaw. i dont drill outside the drive windows as thats where most the bogies run. takes a good 2 hours with no interruptions. you have to remove "plugs" from holesaw after about 2 or 3 drillings. on a 151 track, you can save almost 6 oz. ha ha. but the effect of reducing snow buildup in suspension is considerable weight savings in itself. have also noticed reduced hyfax wear and cooler operating temps. good luck.
