OK guys. It's after midnight and I'm just too excited. The "boss" is asleep and I gotta tell someone. I got my first ever basket case running. I bought a 98 VMAX 700 in pieces and started it up tonight. Couldn't keep it running, I'm waiting on a seal for the coolant system, but it ran solid for about 10 seconds. Question I have is - How can I be sure that the oil is getting injected properly? I don't want to piss away all this time and cash on a burned up motor on the first ride.

good news!

to be sure the oil pump is working, run premix in the gas tank, and put a piece of tape on the oil tank where the oil level is now, then after running it for an hour or so, see if the level dropped in the tank.

also, look for air bublles in the oil line,a nd make sure the oil pump cable actuates and returns when the throttle is moved.

killing a set of plugs is the worst that can happen this way!

the boss did not hear the sled running? LOL

Detached garage. Stock exhaust. Nope, she kept sleepin. Thanks for the tip, that's a good idea. Now I need snow so I can burn some gas out of this thing.

How much will premixing the gas lean out the engine? I pulled out as much gas out of the tank as I could, measured it (as accurately as I could) and mixed it to a 40:1 ratio (2 gallons). Now when I try to start it, I get bad backfiring. The pipe actually blew away from the manifold far enough to land on the donut and gouge it pretty good. If I remember correctly, backfiring is caused by a lean condition, yeah? HELP!!!!

A back fire out the exh. is a rich condition, plug miss firing?

you may be to rich on the oil, @ 40:1 + the oil pump
