I was out in the ditches with my viper er and another guy on an mxz, we were going along pretty hard, and everything was working fine. I went up on the shoulder to go over a bridge, and I pushed it to maybe 3/4 throttle. Then the next thing I knew my gauge pod was blank and I was slowing down, my motor quit on me. I coasted to a stop, then turned the key to try to turn it over, and the starter couldnt turn the motor. I couldnt pull the rope either, it felt solid. My buddy on the mxz stops, we look at it, and he says something about how his old polaris indy 500 used to do that, and all you had to do was turn the primary back by hand and it would be fine. I'm thinking, ya right I just ruined my motor. But sure enough, I was able to turn the primary and then everything was back to normal! I pulled it over by hand first to check it and everything felt exactly the same as usual. I turned the key and it started right off and ran just as good as before. I took it easy the 1/2 mile to my house, but it felt just as powerful as before and I couldn't tell anything was wrong. When I got home I pulled out the plugs, and they were a darker tan color - seemed fine to me. The motor wasn't too hot either. What just happened?

sounds to me like maybe one of u clucthes stuck engaged. some times the primary will stick closed on the belt and u wont be abled to pull it over cuase ur trying to move the sled also. not to say thats all that happened could have cold seized it if u had just taken off . the pistons expand faster then the cylinders can and they stick untill they cool down.
I hadn't just taken off, we were riding for at least 20 minutes before it happened. And if I seized anything, would it run just as well as before?
If the primary just stuck, would that kill the motor?

if the primary sticks it shuts the motor right down. when i blew my motor i had no idea i did other then a 400 rpm drop on top end and burnded threw 2 pistons. id check ur clutches and then do a compression or leakdown test

check the primary - I had a zr600 that did this, and it was a broken motor mount.

It seemed like it at the time. I didn't know if I was moving it a little or stretching the rope. I didn't want to break it so I quit pulling on it.
I'll check out the primary and motor mounts tomorrow
Thanks guys...the whole thing kinda scared me lol

check things out good oil pump everything...
I can eliminate the oil pump, I know that's working because when I rode it tonight my light came on and I had to fill the oil tank.
???
How much oil in the tank did you have before going out, cause if it was full & you used that much I would look to see if a oil line popped off or that the oil pump if not at full open because of a out of adjustment cable after doing the carbs...
Another thing here is is your boon docking a viper with the cold air intake kit, watch that you don't ingest snow cause it can do just what you said, a lock...to cold of (snow/water) in them cylinder & voila expansion to seizure, rapid shut down making it look like you clutches stayed opened...keep us posted

There wasn't much in the oil tank, I figured I'd have to fill it soon. But I'll check it out.
I really doubt that it sucked snow in because I have the stock intake and I was on the shoulder of a road and it wasn't very deep. When I opened the hood I did notice that the intake foam was dry like it should be. Even if I did seize it because of cold/water, wouldn't I be able to tell something was wrong when I ride it now?

I would almost pull the pipes and have a look at the pistons through the port..

When a crank bearing is failing they will sieze and then you can break it loose and it'll run again before over heating and siezing.

BTW who makes that track conversion on the quad?
How can I check out the crank bearings? The way it seems now, I don't think there's anything wrong. I've put probly 35 miles on it since, and I drove it again today. At least I'm hoping that there's nothing wrong and the primary just stuck...
