Cleaning Flat Slide Carbs

when cleaning flat slide carbs, do you only need to take the float bowl off and clean the jets that are in the float bowl, or do I need to take the side cover "top" off of the carb and clean something in that area.

not really..just the bowl and pilot screws

99.9% of your problems will occur below the slide. Or, to be clear, in the bowls.
