I have one, is the cable broke? Look at the left hand side of the sled under the hood. Below the secondary and check the connection and the back of the spedo. 25$ for a speedo w/ 1551 miles. Off from a 2000 SX500. If it's a cable issue grab one from the dealer, that way you know there isn't any oxidation or weak spots to cause a future breakage.

Take the speedo drive housing off and make sure that the key driving the speedo drive is not broken. This happens alot and can be pretty easy/cheap to fix if its just the drive key. If it is broken, take your time to remove the portion of the key that is still inside the drive shaft as they are typically rusted in and don't want to come out real easily. Use some penetrating oil or other lube on it and let it set for awhile then try to pull it out. Many times this is only fixed by drilling out the drive key insert in the drive shaft and replacing it.

97 700 SX with No speedo = BAD speedo bearing. Remove the cover - 3 nuts - and see how good of shape that bearing is back there. My guess is that bearing is shot and has severed the speedo cable. I have performed this type of surgery many times. Keep us posted on the fix.

i replaced the bearing/gear box thing and the key but not the cable and still doesn't work. does that mean that the key or bearing thing is broken again? so now what??

Take the key in your hand and stick it in the drive axle. If you can spin it by hand then the insert in the axle is shot.

Basically the drive axle turns the insert, which turns the key, which turns the gears in the bearing holder, which turns the cable, which turns the speedo input shaft.
With the track off the ground (jack up the rear) have someone else turn the track while you simply work backwards from the speedo to see what all doesn't turn. The last thing that doesn't turn is likely the culprit. You can also work from the axle end and see the first thing that doesn't turn. Be aware that there may be more than one problem.
Based on what you have said I am guessing that either the cable is broken, the insert is shot, or the speedo itself is not working properly. You can stick the key in the speedo and turn it to check to see if it registers.
