when you gear a sled say stock is 22/38..i understand how to get the ratio but dont see what the diffrence between gearing down one tooth on top to 21/38 or gearing up one tooth on bottom to 22/39..the 21/38 would be alittle lower ratio but what are the main diffrences between the two options??i geared up one tooth on bottom in my viper to a 22/39 ratio, but whats the diff. if i was to gear 21/38?

the larger the top sprocket is, the easier it rolls and the more efficent it is, yes you can come up with the same numerical ratios by using smaller top sprockets, but run the biggest top possible to keep from bending the chain so tight, also youll find you dont have to bend the chin with the tensioner as bad keeping a bigger sprocket up top.

thanks, so your saying its better or more "efficient" to get a lower gear ratio by keeping the stock top sprocket or even increasing the size and largening the bottom to get a low gear ratio? I hear people saying they are running big gears in thier sleds..I would think if you went to big with the top and bottom gears the sled just wouldn't pull it..what doesn't make sense to me is I put a larger bottom sprocket(22/39) on bottom which lowered my gear ratio but you'd tihnk it would also have more top end than if i was to put (21/38) in it seeing as how the gears are bigger..its alittle confusing but say if i was to go even larger to 23/40 you'd think the sled would have a hard time pulling that even though its a lower gear ratio..

i guess what i'm saying is with the same ratio 21/38 and 22/39 the gears are diffrent the sled must perform diffrently in certain areas even though its the same ratio..how so?

they will perform the same but the 22/39 will roll easier then the 21/38 will and there will be less bend in the chain at the tensioner, this increases efficency, the more you bend the chain, the more power it takes to do so.
