I just replaced the top end of my Viper after 17 000k. Kind of needed it but how long does it take to break in the rings on this thing?? Any feed back would be great.

just heat cycle the engine 2 times and go ride it as usual, meaning warm it up real good and let it cool down, vary the throttle opening. You can do this in the garage on the stand, do it 2 times then go out ride as normal.

thanks....its done
Here ya go
Well, that’s a million dollar question...nice to hear you got it together & are “ready to ride”...LoL, just had to say that...You will get a lot of different opinions here...some will say you don’t need to it with today’s rings, but again you’re not just breaking in rings...your starting up that engine after having it out & apart...remember heat is your ENEMY...that said, how do we go about it...CYCLES...is your answer, heat cycles...plus load or resistance...you want to put energy into expanding them rings into seating /sealing to the cylinder wall to form an EVEN seal around the bore to hold compression...the first few hours or miles is critical...select an area that long enough without any real obstacles with (preferred slight incline) to do some heat cycles...start with starting sled & bring it up to temperature, now at temp & all seems good, no leaks, no issues...your ready to do a few pulls...I use rpms as my gauge as others will use their speed as a gauge...
1) PULL...start driving it till about 4500 rpms for a 20 min run, varying your rpm from engagement to 4500...after 20 mins or so shut it off...let it cool off completely...pull your plugs & take a look at them, record what you see...that’s right take something to read you will be at this for a while...I take my shop manual with me, cause I will then retorque all the top end just before I do my next heat cycle...a good ½ to ¾ rest is good
2) PULL...start it up again, bring it to temp...do another 15 mins or so at higher rpm, engagement till 6500...always varying the throttle from engagement to 6500 rpm... 15 mins or so shut it off...pull them plugs again & record what you see...let it cool off completely...look things over...a good ½ to ¾ rest is good
3) PULL...start & bring to temp...now you’re going to do full throttl pull for about 10 mins or so...slowly squeezing the throttle up to top rpm & back down...NEVER letting it coast down...keep a load on it as you idle down...pull the plugs & record what you see...let it cool down completely
NOTES:
A) Notice that the times of running the sled/engine was getting shorter at each heat cycles...as you increase the forces inside that engine heat builds quicker.
B) When you are on your last run of each cycle hold your throttle at that rpm range while hitting the kill switch, without closing the throttle, break to a stop...do this near you vehicle as you will need your tools.
C) Keep a close eye on levels, leaks and just about everything you had apart...watch the heat of your clutches, you get the idea.
D) On the last heat cycle, when you have the plugs out look inside then cylinders...what does the wash look like?
Now that all this is done & all went well & nothing did go BANG & the PLUG look good, wash...your “READY TO RIDE”...god I love that saying...LoL...driver like you did before that rebuild...Cheers
