SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones) -- Ford Motor Co. will recall nearly 1.2 million heavy-duty trucks and SUVs equipped with a faulty sensor that could cause the engine to stall, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall will cover Ford F-450 Super Duty trucks, Excursion SUVs and E- Series vans from model years 1997 through 2003. These vehicles are powered by a 7.3 liter diesel engine.

Ford (F) said in a letter posted on the government agency's Web site that the camshaft-sensor circuit in these vehicles can degrade over time, potentially leading to engine failure.

The company said it is aware of 14 accidents related to the glitch but no injuries.

Ford will begin notifying customers on December 17 to bring the targeted vehicles back to the shop for the free repair.

It was targeting all of the 7.3 Diesels as you said, It would not do any engine damage the engine would simlpy stall. "Usually" it would start back up and you could limp it home I had one and I had it happen 1st hand. I took the truck to the dealership and it ran fine for them, on my way home engine quit, this scenario happened twice. After some research on dieselstop.com It become obvious what the problem was so I just swapped it our myself and never had another issue. It is a very easy 5 minute job to replace the sensor and alot of the 7.3 guys where carrying a spare in the glove box.

Its a shame Ford or International didnt "openly" admit the problem sooner, its been around a while. And coincidently they all had the sensor in stock!! hmmm.

At least Ford owns up to the issue and covers it.

Some companies could care less about a vehicle not in warranty any more

that's good to hear now if only GM could follow in their footsteps & recall all of their 6.5TD pieces of garbage every two years if your lucky you need a new injection pump.

Did you mean the 6.6L or no. Cause we been replacing the pump and injectors on the earlier 6.6L also. The 8 $350+(Depends on year) a piece injectors are NORMALLY replaced along with the pump. Thats why I love when people bash FORD/International diesels, cause Chevy diesels have there major issues too. Keep it CUMMING!!!!! Only Diesel Id ever buy.

Ever hear of the Pinto?
Or the Wilderness AT issue or the cruise control switch fire issue. Those all all things that Ford ignored for years until they were eventually getting enough heat from it that they issued a recall.
No automaker is perfect (I could list off many instances where Toyota screwed up), but IMO Ford needs to do more to stand by their customers.
Its like the F-150 I currently drive. It has the passenger-side headgasket oil leak that they all Triton engines from '99-'02 had. Ford never issued a recall. How about my digital odometer that only displays the miles half the time? No recall. How about the rear window that leaks on all F-150s? No recall.
My ole Ford has been a good truck for the most part, but Im looking foreward to switching back to Toyota.
When the day finally comes that I have a Toyota truck in the driveway and a Yamaha sled in the garage, I will be a very happy man.

yeah, I have heard of the pinto.

that was a POS.

but in more recent times you have the 99-04 grand cherokees with the dual zone climate control. talk about a design that needs to be recalled. in 60k, my moms failed 2 times. blend door issues. this time i used a real fix, an aftermarket one that doesnt use flimsy plastic. Too bad you need to rip the entire dash apart to do the fix. The first time it was 1500 dollars (around 8 hours labor and 200 in parts) this time I couldn't stomach the cost.

the wilderness AT tire thing was a firestone issue, and ford made good on aas many as they could. Most accidents were due to fitting 8 people in a 5 pass ute. Ford can't claim fault on those issues.

but I digress.

GM had to wait several years and several injuries/ deaths with their full size pickups with gas tanks mounted outside the frame rail on like 78-88 full size trucks before they finally offered a fix. GM's beancounters waited horribly long on that one.

All manufacturers have faulty vehicles from time to time, but it's how they fix the problem is what matters.

Heck, even yota had issues on their new tundra 5.7 liter v8. about 20 owners had catastrophic engine failures, but all were replaced with new motors for free, as they should be.

BTW, I like my Yotas even better than fords now... The Gf has been a yota fan since 95

you guys should just go buy a dodge and not worry about anything..... Bad fuel mileage to me is acceptable cuz everytime i get in i know i'll make it

LMAO

I'd rather be cummin then strokin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sold my 94 F150 for an '07 Silverado. Worst decision I could of made. 3500 miles and the transmission already leaks fluid. Talked to my local dealer and they said I'm one of many that's said this.

they definately dont build them like they used to thats for sure.... I had a 87 chev k3500 and it was impossible to kill, I had it when i first got my license and nothing i did to that truck would kill it, i was quite impressed... finally got a newer truck and it was a dodge, been drivin one ever since

Classic Ford VS Chebby VS DUDGE VS Whatever

Ford guy here:
78-F250 8200 GVW-167K miles, runs solid

In my sales rigs, I have had the following:
91-93-95-97-99 Explorers, Ran them all to 140k miles, minor ISSUES,
Kept the 95, Wife has it, 184k miles, 1 st set of brakes at 122k miles,
tranny at 126k,. Still no oil leaks, runs like a top!!! And still ALL the OEM LIGHTS !!!!! Incredible IMHO !!!

Son has a 93 Explorer- 189k miles, minor work but still runs great, hoses , brakes etc.

95 F250 HD, XL Plain Jane with the 460 fuel hog stump puller, 102k miles, solid runner with zero issues.

Current sales rig: 04 SuperCrew Lariat with the 5.4 V-8 : 107k miles, 21mpg,
Lost 2 back up sensors under warranty.Brakes at 50% front, 60% rear.
Otherwise very good, was thinking of an 08 but will run it another year easy.

So, Ford has treated me okay. I know there are horror stories for all brands but, I will stick with the ole Blue Oval !!!

My mechanic buddy says to stay away from the Nissan, showed me their weebely oil filter the other day for the 5.7 V-8, damn thing is the size you would expect on a Honda-Toy 4 cylinder!! Hmmmmmmmm????

Cannot get excited about Toy trucks, styling just is not there for me, butt ugly IMHO ( Liked the old Tundra styling) & besides, a truck just needs to be 1 of the 3 US boys. Dont care if its assembled in TX. it is still an Asian truck.
Cannot argue their quality, thats for sure but................nope, couldnt do it!!

Old school guy here!!

WOW you did exactly what I did. I traded in my 97 F150(4.6L) 4X4 for a 07 Silverado(5.3L) Z71, no leaks yet but I do hate it. I love the looks but the rest of the truck is not Built Ford Tough(Sorry if the truth hurts). Ill give Chevy they can build a gas engine, no doubt about. But alot of there newer drivetrain parts either wear quickly or break while in use, from either poor engineering or poor material. The main reason I made the swtich was so I could haul my 7X16+4ft nose steel trailer, the lil 4.6L 3.55 gears just wasnt enough. So I said why not I work for a Chevy dealer, try something diff..........Need less to say when my lease is up Ill be looking for a used F-250(V8 or V10) 4x4. Which now I have my Dad(FORD Engineer of 30+ years) laughing at me cause he told me not to make the switch.

Hey man, thats cool. Like I said, all brands have issues from time to time. You are also right that no matter how much of the Tundra is made in the USA, its still a Japanese truck.
I personally love Toyota's styling and dont much care for what Ford, GM and Chrysler are doing. Personally, I find the styling of the domestics to be very bland and boring.
I grew up in a family who only drives Fords, but bought a Toyota 4Runner in highschool as my first vehicle. I fell in love with Toyota from that point on. I currently drive a '99 Ford F-150, but at the time I really wanted a Tundra but could really afford to buy new, so I bought my F-150 when it was 2 years old. The Ford has been a good truck, but Ive always wanted to get back into a Toyota. For me there is just something about Toyotas that just says to me, "this is where you belong". Every time I drive a Toyota or merely ride in one, I feel like Im where Im supposed to be.
Its much the same with Yamahas. I may ride a Polaris most of the time, but lemmie tell ya, every year when I demo ride on of the new Yammies, I have the same feeling of, "this is where you belong."

It was a problem with bad camshafts on the first batch of that engine. Bad vendor part...it happens.
You also have the issues with the tailgates being weak. Ive seen pictures on Tundrasolutions.com of people who load their ATV in the back of their Tundra and you can see the tailgate has bent from the stress.
The latest one is that some people who have the 6-speed automatic complain that the truck makes a rumbling noise when it shifts. Not sure whats up with that yet, but from what Ive been told they got a bad batch of torque converters. The tranny isnt failing, its just that the converting isnt unlocking like it should and you get the noise when it shifts.
Toyota will get it figured out. Its not uncommon to have issues on the first year of a new model.
BTW, I like my Yotas even better than fords now... The Gf has been a yota fan since 95
Glad to hear it. Ive been a Toyota fan since '97. The only reason I drive a Ford now is because at the time I couldnt afford a Toyota. Toyota's great resale value can be a real double-edged sword. If you are someone who likes to buy vehicles that are a few years old to get a deal on it, forget about a Toyota because when they are 2-3 years old they go for almost what they cost new.
Now Im to the point where I can afford to buy new and in a couple years I will be in the market for a new regular cab 4x4 5-speed Tacoma.

The Gf's current 4runner and bought new in early Jan of 04 is her 04 v8 4runner.

We love that truck. hauls ***, gets great mileage, has a real frame, and has been great to us in the 66k we have put on it.

if that truck had a solid axle in front I wouldnt buy anything else.

she had a 95 4runner,a 98 4runner ,and now the 04.

I drove the 98, but it was pretty underpowered with the 3.4l v6 without the supercharger.

I love 4Runners. I had an '85 4Runner SR5 in highschool. That thing was a beast. Solid front axle, manual-locking hubs, manual transfer case and best of all, manual transmission. That had the 22R-E engine in it (2.4L, SOHC, 16-valve, EFI). It had 245,000 miles on it when I sold it and ran like a top. A guy who lives by my parents in NE Wisconsin bought it from me, his wife drove it for 5 years after that and then he sold it to another guy who parted it out to use for parts in his race truck. The guy races up at Crandon. He does that CORR racing. Thats a vehicle I wish I could have back.
After that I bought a '91 4Runner SR5 V6. That one had the 3VZE (also known as the, "3.slow") and a 4-speed ECT automatic tranny. It was a nice rig and the only thing I ever had to fix on it was a brakeline that got a pinhole in it.
If I could have afford a Tundra when I bought my F-150 back in '01 thats what Id probably be driving now, but when you are young and dont make a whole lot of money, you gotta buy what you can afford, even if its not really what you want.
My old Ford has been a good truck, but Im really looking foreward to getting a new Tacoma in a couple years. I was next to an Xtracab V6 PreRunner at a stoplight today (thats the 4x2 that looks like a 4x4) and I just think they look so awesome.
