Hey guys im trying to test my electrical system on my srx 1999 and I dont know how to do it. checking the pick up coil i stick the red and black leads into the green/white red/white wires coming out of the plug. does it matter which one they go into or not. also which setting do i put it onto to test? I cant figure the damn thing out. any help would be great.

you need to have the meter on the ohms setting. the icon on the meter will look similar to a horse shoe. And may have several ranges. If you do a search on my name you will find a post that I just gave Yamaholic the measuements for an SX, this may get you in the ball park.

thanks tod do I simply stick the red a black probes into the pick up coil wires and pull it over. like stick the black probe into the red/white wire and red into white/green?Tod said:you need to have the meter on the ohms setting. the icon on the meter will look similar to a horse shoe. nononono do not pull it over. what you are measureing does not require the motor to turn at all. all you want is the resistance reading from the wires on the coil. there is a range that is acceptable from yamaha to make the motor run properly.

Na, I gotcha/ I pretty sure my pick up coil is dead. Its the only thing that makes sense. Sled had plenty of spark and ran perfect when I put her away, now after not taking good enough care of her shes letting me know.

ya, when you check ohms you dont pull it over, when you check output voltage you pull the engine over with meter hooked up to wires. Alot of times you can ohm something out but that doesnt always mean its working properly, if the output voltage is too low it wont give the right signal to the cdi box.

Ok guys Im starting to think Im crazy. Why is everything so difficult for me? I have put my meter to the ohm setting<one with upside down horseshoe in it>It ranges from 200 to 2000k. I put it on the 20k setting and I get a reading of 7.00 no matter what I test. Even if I touch the probes together it reads 7.00 Am I missing a step. IVe tried every setting nothing works. Im chasing my tail and at this point IVe removed the wiring harness from under the motor-Everytime i pulled the motor over with the probes in the pick up coil wires the highest it read was -0.03 volts.(with the meter set on dcv 20) Im not convinced its bad because no matter what I test I cant get the kind of readings other guys get on here for there sleds.IVe put the meter on the ohms setting to 20k and unplug the kill switch and it reads 7.00 Ive checked the hand warmer plug that controls the temp and it ends up reading 7.00. I dont understand why something so simple is driving me nuts.

your meter should read, 0.00 when on the ohm scale with your positive and negative leads touching each other., do you have the leads plugged into the right sockets on the meter??, theres differnt sockets for differnt things you check.

THis is what i have. Everything pluged in right. Is it just to much of a pos to work? I have 2 meters and both give the same readings so I cant imaging its that far offmrviper700 said:your meter should read, 0.00 when on the ohm scale with your positive and negative leads touching each other., do you have the leads plugged into the right sockets on the meter??, theres differnt sockets for differnt things you check.

put a new 9 volt battery in the meter, if it still doesnt zero when the probes touch each other, the meter is junk!
