sled:03 mtn viper. issues:runs fine in the shop on the stand, runs fine gingerly off the line, at about 5k rpm(just after engagement) bad out after that throughout the entire powerband burbles, girgles, misses, pops, runs fine to a point then all goes to hell. now i dont need the obvious advice as to tors, carbs, etc. as a seasoned yamaha owner of most all models produced by our beloved factory since 1968, this sled is kicking my butt for answers. yes the carbs have been cleaned, floats set, set to factory specs for altitude already bypassed tors. jetting is fine. seems to be perhaps an electrical gremlin? do have a spare cdi, havent put it on yet. 1175 miles on this sled, bone stock. help please.

I suspect the wiring harness, or another electric component including stator. You can disconnect the wiring harness from the hood, loosen the ties under the engine and then fish it out. Tie a string to the end if you want to help get it back in there. Then you can check it over real well. After that I would start testing every ignition component one by one.

good thoughts. may have overlooked that as this being the wifes sled. where is the most likely spots for rubs? knowing the miles of wire in there, a common spot would save hours of time, espescially knowing the amount of tape used to wrap the looms.

I believe the popular area is under the motor where the harness crosses over the 'square tube' that is under there. Follow Ding's advice, he's a fart smeller! :)

update: chased the wires around, saw no visible wear. upon further inspection started the sled. ran for a moment then died. no spark. wiggled the connector at the cdi, spark! after unbolting the cdi, the input harness fell off. snapped it back tight and on the stand seems to perform like it should. hope this was the cure. thanks for all input and any future input.
