Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'll try to describe the symptoms the best I can. I have a 2000 SRX 700.

Last season during one of the last rides I began having some issues. Sometimes my headlight would go out for a few seconds. Sometimes when coming to a stop it would almost die. It would bog down really bad. If I sat there and kept feathering the trottle to keep it running for about a minute or so it would take off like nobodys business (like an SRX normally does). Then one day while riding normally down the trail, not at low speed or low RPM, it just died like someone hit the kill switch. No spark, no nothing.

So, it sat all summer. Over the summer I talked to a mechanic and told him my symptoms. He thought it was my voltage regulator and stator. Therefore, I ordered both.

Thursday night I put the voltage regulator on. Before we changed out the stator my buddy thought we should test the stator. I don't know anything about voltage meters or ohm meters but my buddy does. After talking with the mechanic again on how to test it my buddy tested it and it seemed to be fine. We had spark so we decided to see if it would start. It did. I drove it around the yard a little bit and it ran ok with the exception of it backfiring a little and bogging down at low RPM's. Maybe a symptom of sitting all summer and maybe bad gas? We pulled the plugs and one of them looked fouled so we changed it. Test drove it again and it seemed to run fine.

Went for a ride on Friday night. It seemed to be running fine at first but then it began to run like crap at low RPM's or when coming to a stop. I couldn't keep it idling without feathering the trottle. The headlight went out again for a few seconds at one point. We put on about 40 miles and then stopped at a local watering hole. I was there about 30 minutes and decided to go home.

It started right up but I had no headlight. I decided to drive it a little bit to see if it would come back on. It didn't. Then it just died again like someone hit the kill switch. I didn't check it at the time but I'm sure I had no spark because it didn't even attempt to start. I was frustrated, pissed and tired so I left it. Yesterday I was sick with the flu (no not the bottle flu, not even close) so we didn't get to it until today.

My buddy and I go to pick it up this morning. The first thing we check is to see if we have spark. We did. I checked the plugs and two of them didn't look very good. Nonetheless, it started. While running, I had no headlight or gauges working. Drove it about 50 yards and it dies again. No spark.

Talked to the mechanic again and he thinks it could possibly still be the stator. He said the first thing he would check though is a bad ground. Where would I even begin to look??? He thinks the stator could have a bad wire but still possible test out ok like it did the other night. He also thinks that if the stator is running intermediately (sp?) that it could be causing the plugs to foul. Does anybody else agree with this or have any other ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would just take it to the shop but they said they wouldn't even be able to look at it for about 2 weeks. We have good snow now.....I can't wait that long!!

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I am no expert by any means and I hope that someone else will chime in here but, it sounds to me like a case of the wiring harness blues....Check the main wiring harness that runs under the motor of the sled.....find where it is worn through and seperate the wires, tape them up and get some wiring corigated plastic loom from a local auto dealer. You will be good to go!!!!!!!! Search SRX Wiring Harness

i had the head light and tach problem and i pulled the harness and there it was rubbed through taped it up and put that plastic tube on it and we were g oto go>>>>>........ id pull the harness and check

Hopefully I word this right.......

If I have a wiring harness rub through will it be evident right away? In other words, does it rub through the existing covering or coating and then through the wires inside? Or do you have to remove the cover and examine the wires inside?

It sure sounds like the harness under the engine, its actually pretty easy to repair, all you need to do is simply disconnect the harness up at the hood hinge, and then tie a string or cord on the harness coming from sled, youll need to stick your hand down between the exh pipe manifolds and release the little black bend over clamps, then go over behind the recoil housing and pull the harness back up and out from under engine about a good foot to foot and a half, and youll most likely find the harness rubbed and chaffed thru, tape up each wire seperately then tape the harness again. I like to place the harness in black convolute tubing you can get from any auto parts store. this will solve ALL the issues and never happen again.

Yup.....it was the ol' classic "under the motor wire harness rub thru". Three larger wires completely bare, two smaller wires almost wore completely thru.

Thanks guys!!

Oh, by the way, I have a brand spankin' new stator for a 2000 SRX 700 for sale. I can't return it for some reason. :o|

Way to go dealer!

Hey, gotta love those dealers don't ya! Mis-diagnose the problem, sell you parts you don't need and then send you packing when you want to return them! That is typical though, unfortunately most places wont let you return electrical components. God bless TOTALLYAMAHA!

Well, I can't really blame the dealer. It's mainly my fault I guess. I talked to a mechanic from the dealership over the summer at a local watering hole while he was off the clock. I thought it sounded like a good solution so I just ordered the parts. My bad.

Hey guys mine just started doing the same thing today and it sure sounds like the harness too. The only thing that I was wondering is how many miles on your guys sleds when it did this. Mine only has 1800 km I just don't think it would do it so soon. I'm quite pissed about this because it was running great 2 weeks ago when I parked it after a ride and now I got it ready to load on the trailer today for our snowmobile trip tomorrow and it started doing this. It never fails, when you need to have it work well they give problems.

Thanks
Collin
